‘Ja, ja’ land
[…] a big part in her future) and Teodora Gheorghiu (Sophie) give satisfactory “young artist” performances. The more stage-savvy Kate Royal does not have the creamy sound one expects from a Marschallin, with some wiry top notes, but looks beautiful and carries herself elegantly. That she manages to be affecting is an achievement in the circumstances of an unsympathetic production with bizarre costuming (Nicky Gillebrand, sparing no one; Ms. Erraught gets the worst of it). Lars Woldt sings the Baron with a smooth, youthful light bass but is not encouraged beyond shtick. //www.youtube.com/watch?v=Uuby6Cxa_R8 The Salzburg Festival has been presenting Rosenkavalier at regular intervals since 1929, and half of the productions in this survey originated there. The 2014 staging by Harry Kupfer, conducted by Franz Welser-Möst (ably replacing the indisposed Zubin Mehta), made festival history. For the first time, Salzburg gave Strauss and Hofmannsthal’s opera with the complete text. The resulting […]

Der fliegende Holländer 1841 Theater an der Wien
[…] the ghost ship materialize as dancers. It's an extremely effective coup de théâtre. Samuel Youn sings the Holländer with great presence. Youn's Holländer is no big mean brute, but a surprisingly sympathetic personality. When he rejects Senta's sacrifice, the nuances in Youn's voice suggests the heartbreak the Dutchman feels. For a bass baritone, Youn's voice is surprisingly agile, which can be an advantage. Ingela Brimberg sings Senta, Lars Woldt sings a superbly snarky Donald, and Bernhard Richter sings Georg. Manuel Günther sang the Steuermann. Ann-Beth Solvang sang Mary, her chorus of women (the Arnold Schoenberg Choir) shown as choristers, quite appropriately. I don't know who the main dancer is, but he's good, his athletic physicality particularly effective when he and his colleagues are dancing the Holländer's crew. They're athletically physical, more like demons than ghosts, which is a valid […]

Devastating Wozzeck Fabio Luisi Zurich Opera Leigh Melrose
Operahouse Zurich brought Alban Berg Wozzeck to the Royal Festival Hall, London . Fabio Luisi conducted Philharmonia Zturich and a very good cast in a concert performance. With all pretence at staging removed (apart from natural good acting) we could focus on the sheer musical audacity of Berg's writing, and pick up on the processes the music employs to create the drama. Wozzeck describes a whole community caught up in insane delusions. Wozzeck is at the vortex, but his story began long before, and will certainly continue. Lusis's Wozzeck felt like a tightly twisted knot, building up tensions that reflect the maze-like inner complexities in the score, What a viscerally physical performance ! The orchestra played like athletes, very strong men (and women) pulling the knot tighter with spirited, energetic playing., prickling with suppressed violence. "Eine Apoplexia cerebri" sings the Doctor (Lars Woldt, terrifying the Captain […]
