I noted a couple of weeks ago that Seattle will have Berlioz's Beatrice et Benedict next season, but I didn't write up the rest of the season. I also want to point out that next month they've got what looks like a strongly-cast Kat'ya Kabanova, by Janacek. Cast includes Melody Moore and Corinne Winters in the title role; Victoria Livengood as Kabanicha; Joseph Dennis and Scott Quinn as Boris (Quinn was Steva in last season's shattering Jenufa in SF); Maya Lehyani as Varvara. Here's Seattle for 2017-18; you probably know who wrote all of these, so I left out composer names: Madame Butterfly Performances: August 5, 6, 9, 12, 13, 16, 18, 19, 2017 Cio-Cio-San Liana Haroutounian* (Aug. 5, 9, 13, & 18) [So if you missed her here....] Alexia Voulgaridou* (Aug. 6, 12, 16, & 19) Pinkerton Alexey Dolgov* (Aug. 5, 9, 13, & 18) Dominick […]

Rule of three
Puccini’s Il trittico was most definitely not an overwhelming success when it received its December 1918 world premiere at the Met, an event which the composer was unable to attend due to World War II. Not even a cast featuring Claudia Muzio, Geraldine Farrar, and Giuseppe De Luca could win over the critics. Contemporary reports said of Il tabarro, “Ever since Mascagni brought the barnyard and Leoncavallo the mountebanks to the Italian operatic stage, Puccini himself has weltered in melodrama.” Suor Angelica fared even worse: “It is almost always metronomic, dull, drilling upon its theme with the persistence of a dentist at a tooth. There is no blood or bone to it, no strength to uphold the nun’s veiling the concept.” There was some cold comfort in the description of “O mio babbino caro,” the hit tune from Gianni Schicchi: “Here, for once, comes pure melody; melody, indeed, so […]

Absurdly, Early Mozart at Santa Fe Opera
Santa Fe Opera’s combination of setting and traditions is not only distinct from anywhere else but unique. Set in the Sangre de Cristo mountains, the theater is open-air (covered), and gorgeous sunsets enhance opening scenes. Friday night’s offering of La Finta Giardiniera (the Fake Gardener Girl; repeats Thursday and Friday August 21st; K.196, 1774, opera buffa by Mozart, libretto attributed to Petrosellini) followed form. SFO is one of the top companies of the US, its productions generally imaginative and its programs always including one or two off-the-beaten-path operas in addition to the well-worn standards. They have a strong history of US and world premieres, as well as some brilliant commissions (the Higdon Cold Mountain I just wrote about; an opera about Steve Jobs by Mason Bates, has been announced for 2017) . Any serious opera fan should make the place a destination; this was my fourth visit. The composer was […]

Nightmare at Santa Fe as two opera stars pull out
The tenor Warren Mok has withdrawn from the US premiere of Huang Ruo’s opera Dr. Sun Yat-sen, citing other commitments. The show is due to open in a fortnight. The soprano Laura Tatulescu has dropped out of Don Pasquale ‘due to severe allergies’. To lose one star is a misfortune. To lose two… More here.
