When Alfred Brendel's Steinway played jazz
[…] After his successful bid for the iconic Steinway, Siggi Loch agreed in discussion with the then principal conductor of the Berlin Philharmonic Simon Rattle and general manager of the Philharmonie Martin Hoffmann that Alfred Brendel's piano would return to the Philharmonie for a valedictory performance. At this concert in December 2012 it was played in the Kammermusiksaal of the Philharmonie by three of the finest jazz pianists in Europe, Michael Wollny, Leszek Możdżer, and Iiro Rantala, and, quite appropriately, the concert opened with two pianists improvising on the Aria from the Goldberg Variations. This first concert was a huge success and began the Jazz at Berlin Philharmonic series which continues today curated by Siggi Loch. Almost all concerts in the 1200 seat chamber music hall and even in the 2250 seats big hall have been sold out, and in 2014 Siggi Loch was […]

Summer music without that incontinent applause
[…] changed its strategy to winning back lapsed listeners like me, it could increase its audience by 25%. But there is very little chance of the current race-to-the-bottom ending. What is much more likely is that next year's season highlight will be Clemency Burton-Hill presenting Clemmie's Love Island Prom. So here is my summer playlist which is guaranteed 100% free of patronising presenters and incontinent applauders:~ 'Music for Installations' by Brian Eno~ 'Earth Particles' by Leszek Możdżer & Holland Baroque - see video below~ 'Invisible Faces' by Tomáš Liška~ 'How We Fall' by J. Peter Schwalm ~ 'Gypsy Baroque' by Il Suonar Parlante Orchestra and Vittorio Ghielmi~ Thomas Adès 'Asyla', CBSO conducted by Simon Rattle - this work is said to be influenced by contemporary electronic trance music New Overgrown Path posts are available via RSS/email by entering your email address in the right-hand sidebar. Lars Danielsson: Double Concerto for cor anglais and cello/double bass – Björn Bohlin, Lars Danielsson, Grégory Privat, Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra, André de Ridder (HD 1080p)
Accompanied by the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra under the baton of the German conductor André de Ridder, the Swedish jazz bass player and composer Lars Danielsson, the Swedish classical oboist Björn Bohlin and the French jazz pianist Grégory Privat perform Lars Danielsson's Double Concerto for cor anglais and cello/double bass. Recorded at Gothenburg Concert Hall, on April 11, 2018.✻The Swedish jazz bass player and composer Lars Danielsson has written a piece for Gothenburg Symphony's Björn Bohlin, cor anglais, with the composer playing a part for cello/double bass – a truly creative performing musician.Regarding sounds, rhythms and colours, composers like Debussy and Ravel and innovators such as Gil Evans and Joe Zawinul have made impressions on Lars Danielsson. The Double Concerto is both sensitive and filled with energy (joy!), with an innate ability to captivate the listener.Lars Danielsson (b. 1958)♪ Double Concerto for cor anglais and cello/double bass (2018) (World Premiere)Björn Bohlin, cor […]
