Tarmo Peltokoski; Philharmonie, BerlinReviewed by Tony Cooper, 23 March 2024Helsinki-born composer, Kaija Anneli Saariaho’s Ciel d’hiver made a great contribution to Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester’s concert at the Philharmonie, BerlinWhilst taking a break from Dmitri Tcherniakov’s Ring cycle at Staatsoper Berlin [see Tony's review], I took in a concert by Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin, conductor Tarmo Peltokoski, at the Philharmonie in a well-planned programme comprising Prokofiev’s Piano Concerto No.2 in G minor with soloist Jan Lisiecki, Sibelius’ Lemminkäinen Suite and a piece by the Helsinki-born composer, Kaija Saariaho, entitled Ciel d’hiver (Winter sky). Salonen Sibelius Finnish independence Lemminkäinen Suite
[…] drawing on the past in order to move forward. Given that Wagner drew on Norse/Icelandic legend for Der Ring des Niebelungen, it would have seemed logical to create a saga based on the Kalevala. Like Kullervo op,7 1892, and indeed the Music for Press Celebrations, the Lemminkäinen Suite is a series of scena, effectively four tone poems on the adventures of Lemminkäinen, a figure in the Kalevala. In the first section, Lemminkäinen.and the Maidens of .Saari, the hero is youthful. Sweeping themes suggest open horizons. Salonen emphasized the underlying rhythmic pulse, for the young Lemminkäinen represents physical vitality. That's why he seduces all the maidens on the island. Brief, more cautious figures, like an animal stalking prey, give way to exuberant rhythms : the thrill of the chase. One of the good things about Spring is an overnight concert of classical music , that truly brings out the essence of the Hindustani Classical Music. An overnight concert is always a special treat , and SPIC-MACAY deserves special thanks from all music connoisseurs for this wonderful concert lineup and arrangements at the CV Raman Auditorium of IISER, Pashan in Pune. The lineup of concerts starting around 9pm included one of the best mix of Indian Classical Vocal, Instrumental , young – masters of dhrupad and hindustani styles. It was a feast for all music lovers and 9 hours of concerts by five talented artists was enjoyed every moment. Every artist and the accompanist was applauded with a well deserved standing ovation by the connoisseurs ! The time flew starting with the Yaman in the evening when Lalat and Nat-Bhairav arrived early morning to signoff with a Bhairavi ! Here […]
