Moving intimacy and sense of communication: Bach's St Matthew Passion from the Academy of Ancient Music, music director Laurence Cummings and just eight singers
[…] conclusion.Anna Dennis was very intent in ' Ich will dir mein Herze schenken', conveying serious joy allied to distinctly perky oboes. For the lovely duet, 'So ist mein Jesus nun gefangen' we had two expressively phrased, mellifluous voices (Dennis and Mead) intertwining and contrasting with the vividly sharp-edge contribution from choir two. In part two, Dennis was plangent in the rectative ' Er hat uns allen wohlgetan', poised, and moving in the subsequent aria, 'Aus Liebe'.Tim Mead was serious and intent in 'Buß und Reu', the sense of intimacy having just flutes (terrific) and continuo heightened by the contrast between the rhythmic sway of the instruments and Mead's considered performance. Mead opened part two with an account of 'Ach, nun ist mein Jesus hin!' that combined an intensity of line with great freedom, contrasting with the highly structured polyphony from choir two. 'Erbarme dich' had a gentle sway to it […]

Revisiting Staatsoper Berlin’s Ring cycle proved a thrilling experience: Dmitri Tcherniakov's production returns to Unter den Linden with conductor Philippe Jordan
[…] Brünnhilde's 'Big Sleep' number delivering a dramatic and soulful reading of 'Heil dir, Sonne! Heil dir, Licht!' while 'Wonder Boy' rather bemused by the goings-on around him casually stands beside her with hands stuffed in his tracksuit pockets looking rather perplexed and amused. Then the famed couple, solemnly declaring their eternal love for each other, put all the vocal energy that exists between them into a majestic rendering of that great and telling number 'Leuchtende Liebe, Lachender Tod' (Radiant Love, Laughing Death) to a thunderous reception from a packed and appreciative house of seasoned and knowledgeable Wagnerians. When one arrives at Götterdämmerung the Norms (Marina Prudenskaya, Kristina Stanek, Anna Samuil) are by now crotchety old women hobbling about fudging in their handbags dressed in the comfy style of old grannies bent over and crippled with arthritis and, like Wotan, aided by walking-sticks. There's no evidence of them weaving the […]

Little short of a revelation: Michael Spyres, Les Talens Lyriques & Christophe Rousset explore Wagner's influences with In the Shadows
[…] needs no introduction, but the influence of Bellini's endless melody on Wagner should not be underestimated. Here were hear Pollione and Flavio's scene, 'Meco all’altar di Venere…Me protegge, me difende'. Spyres turns in a wonderfully heroic performance, ably supported by Julien Henric.Marschner's operas remain underestimated today, but Hans Heiling (1833) was one of the works that greatly influenced Wagner, not least the psychological complexity of the anti-hero. Here we hear Konrad's 'Gönne mir ein Wort der Liebe', a remarkably piece that really does seem to both look back to Beethoven and look forward to early Wagner. Spyres brings a lovely expansiveness to the lines, a feeling of breadth to the paragraphs that links both to the French works on the disc and to Wagner's own writings. The disc ends with music from three of Wagner's early operas, the works where these influences can be seen at their music direct (and undigested).First, Arindal's […]
