2023 in Opera and Music Theatre: historically informed Berlioz & Wagner, dramatic Handel, a G&S rarity, RVW, Zandonai in Berlin, new Jonathan Dove

Wagner was something of an ongoing theme for 2023, including Dresden Music Festival's historically informed Das Rheingold and a remarkable performance of Die Walküre from London Opera Company. Handel masterpieces included Jephtha at Covent Garden with Allan Clayton and Saul at the Komische Oper, Berlin with Luca Tittoto, plus more of a rarity, Arminio, from the Jette Parker Young Artists at Covent Garden.We also caught Allan Clayton in a remarkable reinvention of Britten's Peter Grimes at the Paris Opera. Sicklist: Hampson’s out
Thomas Hampson has withdrawn from Munich’s Cosi fan tutte next month. His replacement is Luca Tittoto. Also out at Munich is Isabel Leonard who was meant to be singing Angelina in Cenerentola. Her substitute is Margarita Gritskova.

[…] whoever directed the next production faced an enormous challenge, given the real risk that any new version would invite unfavourable comparisons with its predecessor. In the event, however, Richard Jones’ offering, which represents a joint production with the Teatro Real, Madrid and the Lyric Opera of Chicago, proves to be perfectly decent, and if it may not be around for the next 41 years it should still enjoy a reasonable number of revivals.
