[…] Sur le Fil I would include this entire soundtrack if it were feasible. It is one of my absolute favorites. This particular track evokes a certain grey melancholy that one might feel while walking in the rain up the hills of Montmartre. Or something like that. Yann Tiersen , the composer, certainly seems to be channeling Erik Satie here, what with the waltzy form and the sparseness of the score. And this is fitting, since Erk Satie lived in Paris and for a period of an entire year only wore grey velvet. My only regret with choosing this particular track is that there’s no accordion, because the accordion on the soundtrack is so wonderful. Including accordion in general is almost a surefire way to get me to like a piece. It’s on my bucket list of instruments to learn. I’m reminded of my senior year in college, when I had […]

Homrich was adequate, if dry, suited to more conventional performances than this one, dominated as it was by Terfel's unusually fine characterization. Fabio Trümpy as the Steuermann, was a discovery. He's a Zürich local boy, and sings in the Ensemble there. His clear, bright voice was another revelation of the evening - […]

[…] their social wiring is not connected. Read the responses to any sports blog. Anyway, if my music gets a reaction as strong as a desire to push me off a cliff, then obviously I’m doing something powerful enough to warrant such a reaction. Much better than that indifference, right? [EDITOR'S NOTE: True, but I'd rather they toss my CDs off the cliff than me] Henry Cow in Vevey, Switzerland (Featuring “Vevey Improv”, “March”, “Erk Gah”; live 1976) CM: How often do you perform barefoot? I noticed that there have been a few people over the years, even some classical people doing this. Does it provide a more earthly or grounded perspective on your music at all? FF: I started doing it regularly when I played in the late great Lars Hollmer ‘s Looping Home Orchestra in the ’90′s. All the other band members did it, so I […]
