Suppleness and elegance: a new Les Pêcheurs de Perles from an all-French team
[…] away from the standard post-Verismo style) with three principals at ease with the way the music expects a certain fluent suppleness in the upper voice, usually allied to a rather narrow bore emission style (think more Nicolai Gedda than Luciano Pavarotti).Up till now, to get a really ideal version on disc (irrespective of edition) you have to go back to 1953 with the recording by the French-Canadian husband and wife team Pierrette Alarie and Léopold Simoneau conducted by Jean Fournet. So it is with great delight (and not a little surprise) that I can wholeheartedly recommend this new recording. It oozes the requisite elegance and style, and all three principals bring a wonderful suppleness to their singing. And it helps, too, that all three are Francophone.Julie Fuchs displays a rich, lyric voice with a glorious ease and facility in the coloratura allied to a delightful ability to charm. The beautiful stage is empty
[…] And with five stage venues at its disposal, the festival can pack the schedule with a variety of productions and start times. The Théâtre de l’Archevêché (home of this season’s Don Giovanni and Rake’s Progress) is an open-air theater in the courtyard of the former Archbishop’s Palace, with an adjacent museum where costumes from past Don Giovanni productions are on display (plenty of ruffles and velvet, with some gorgeous pieces worn by Renato Capecchi, Leopold Simoneau and Leonie Rysanek). The Jeu de Paume is a restored 18th century miniature, where Erismena is given. The 2007 Grand Théâtre de Provence (Carmen, Pinocchio) features a spacious circular stone courtyard for refreshment and gathering. Tips: Neither the open air nor the air-conditioned interiors are too frigid, so leave at home all that cashmere you wear to the Met. Intermissions feature excellent wines and more than enough time to include a cigarette or two. […]

Still being pretty green, I realized only in retrospect that the most special part of that afternoon were the retired artists who introduced each musical selection—great singers whom I never could have heard perform—Tito Gobbi, Giuseppe di Stefano, Bidu Sayão, Eleanor Steber, Leopold Simoneau, Elisabeth Schwarzkopf (yes, even her little speech was terribly mannered) and more. During the long drive home, my head was spinning! I probably didn’t even know what opera was when the closure of the old Met in 1966 was commemorated by a star-stuffed occasion. By 1983 though I had already attended a few performances at the Met when the colossal all-day Centennial Gala took place and I sat transfixed in front of my television […]
