[…] post, Grażyna Bacewicz (1909-1969) continued to compose even as the Second World War ravaged her native Poland. A pupil of the Nadia Boulanger (among others), Bacewicz’ instantly recognizable work balances harsh modernist discordance and eerie aural textures with unpredictable melodies and intriguing rhythms in a manner faintly reminiscent of Shostakovich. Her Piano Concerto (1949) is both engagingly tuneful, and bristling with barely-controlled energies, which seethe furiously over half-hidden darkness… Latvian poet and composer Lūcija Garūta (1902-1977) played a central role in her homeland’s music life for half a century, not only as a nationalist composer (her 1943 cantata God! Your Land is Burning! was banned by the Soviet authorities), but also as a pianist, teacher, and administrator. Video of the Day: Vestard Shimkus Plays Rhapsody In Blue
Latvian pianist Vestard Shimkus ici Latvian pianist Vestard Shimkus is making his Canadian debut on Wednesday evening at the Glenn Gould Studio, together with his wife, soprano Elina Shimkus. Here is Shimkus playing Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue, a very stylish rendition. The first half of the concert will open with Vestard Shimkus' own transcription of 'Liebestod' from Tristan und Isolde, and Liszt's transcription for 'Spinnerlied' from Der fliegende Hollander. This will be followed by Latvian composer Janis Medins' 'Dainas' and Peteris Vasks' 'White Scenery' from The Seasons. The first half concludes with Shimkus playing his own composition, 'Black Charleston' (2011). Soprano Elina Shimkus In the second half, he will be joined by his wife, soprano Elina Shimkus in a performance of Janis Medins' song cycle, 'Orphan's Song', Lucija Garuta's 'The Givers', Jazeps Medins' 'Reverie' and Jazeps Vitols' 'Happiness'. The […]

This Week in Toronto (April 1 - 7)
Tenor Colin Ainsworth sings Tamino in Opera Atelier's The Magic Flute (Photo: Kevin Clark) Opera Atelier, Canada'a premiere baroque opera company, opens its spring season with a perennial favourite, Mozart's The Magic Flute. The cast is a strong one, with a mix of Canadian and visiting guest artists. Tamino is tenor Colin Ainsworth, who was so impressive in the recent staged avant-garde song cycle, Janacek's Diary of One Who Disappeared put on by Against The Grain Theatre. Pamina is former COC Ensemble Studio soprano Laura Albino. Rising star dramatic coloratura Ambur Braid with her extraordinary high register is Queen of the Night, a role she has previously sung in the special Ensemble performance of the COC. (Look out for my article on her in the Spring issue of Opera Canada, to come out in early April.) Baritone Olivier Laquerre is the birdcatcher Papageno. Sarastro is Portuguese bass Joao […]
