The Hills Are Alive with the Sound of Muzak
[…] spirited start while energetic performances of the ‘Sinfonia’ from Verdi’s Luisa Miller and the ‘Intermezzo’ from Puccini’s Manon Lescaut added to the overall excitement of the evening. If the orchestra found themselves on top form so did the quartet of singers engaged for this significant concert of Erl’s winter festival which was established in 2012. Not only did they end the year on a high but so did the audience. The Australian-born baritone, James Roser, delivered a brilliant reading of the aria ‘Nemico della Patria’ from Giordano’s Andrea Chenier and successfully teamed up with the Chinese-born tenor, Hui Jin, for a dramatic reading of that well-loved duet from Donizetti’s L’elisir d’amore - ‘Venti scudi’.Georgian-born, Sophie Gordeladze, sparkled in Leonora’s aria ‘Tacea la note placida’ from Verdi’s Il trovatore with her high soprano voice capturing the piece so clear and convincingly while the Italian-born mezzo-soprano, Alena Sautier, coquettish, sultry looking […]

It was a stormy Tirol yesterday afternoon when I arrived here in Erl. And I think we may be set for yet more unseasonable weather. But it is Austria with all its charms all the same. Although less than a mile from the border with Germany it is clearly a different country. I am staying in a delightful little hotel in nearby Ebbs. It was a short 5 minute drive to Erl to see an orchestra dress rehearsal of Rigoletto yesterday evening in the spectacular new Festspielhaus. More of that later. Meanwhile a quick note - our dear friend Sophie Gordeladze is singing Gilda and it promises to be a superb addition to her repertoire. The dress rehearsal is on Monday evening. Hayley Carmichael is notably impish, Roser Cami exudes an inviolable dignity even when stapled to a wall, and Josep Maria Pou moves effortlessly from shambling Shakespearean clown to suicidal tragic hero. Maika Makovski also provides pungent accompaniment on electric keyboard and guitar. This may not be your Shakespeare or mine. It is, however, emphatically Bieito's. And what he memorably unearths is the idea of the forest as a place of both escape and terror. Above all, what he discovers in Shakespeare […]
