[…] this for a traditional song for all the folk influence. Zab kohouta (Kill the Rooster) has a significant piano part, fast and dramatic with a more declamatory vocal line, whilst Volavka stříbrná (Silver Heron) features a slow lyrical vocal line over an elegantly clear piano accompaniment. The final song, Tři kumpáni (Three Pals) is a drinking song, with a vivid and lively piano accompaniment. We finished with a group of four songs by Albert Roussel, setting the Symbolist poet Henri Regnier. In Le départ the vocal line flows around the text, with the piano colouring and commenting. Voeu has a lyrical vocal line over a flowing piano part, and this seems to be a style that Roussel enjoys. Both the remaining songs, Le jardin mouillé and Madrigal lyrique feature a slower moving lyrical line over a faster piano part, and in Le jardin mouillé we can hear clear echoes of Debussy's Jardins sous la Pluie in the evocative piano part. Groundbreaking Hans Werner Henze - Das Floß der Medusa

Peter Stein’s narrator (often the most difficult role to cast) is exceptional, but given his background this probably isn’t a surprise. This is such a nuanced, beautifully crafted reading of Charon it’s hard not to be persuaded by the mythology of the character. There is something Sophoclean about it, a depth which Henze didn’t particularly get from Regnier."

Berlioz, Duparc and Massenet are included, but also Saint-Saëns, Charles Bordes, Gabriel Pierné, Théodore Dubois, Louis Vierne and Benjamin Godard. Sponsored by Palazetto Bru Zane, Alpha Classics produced the ground breaking Saint-Saëns Mélodies avec orchestra with Yann Beuron and Tassis Christoyannis (please read more here) which has been described as the "opening of a Pandora's box ......(on) dozens, if not hundreds, of mélodies sublimely arrayed in sparkling orchestral colours (which) were slumbering on library shelves".These mélodies reflect the renaissance of French poetry in the Romantic period, and of contemporary poets like Hugo, Gautier, Banville, Régnier and Verlaine. The enhancement of verse by music created a new genre, taking art song from the confines of private salons to the concert hall. Although grand […]
