Introducing Caio Fabriccio, Handel's pasticcio based on Hasse's opera
[…] quantities of new music, having a few familiar arias at the ready must have been most helpful. And London audiences did not like vast quantities of recitative so the new ones (it is unlikely Handel had access to Hasse's originals) were shorter and more incisive. But using Hasse's arias from the opera and arias from other operas by Hasse plus music by Leonardo Vinci, Antonio Pollarolo, Francesco Corselli, Tomaso Albinoni, Giuseppe Sellito, Leonardo Leo and Francesco Ciampi, Handel created a new, composite work. Significantly, there are no arias by Handel, he gave the floor to the younger generation and kept his contribution to the recitatives and to the editorial. And before we dismiss such an assemblage out of hand, it should be remembered that composers like Vivaldi produced pasticcio operas of their own work. It was an accepted form. We are only just beginning to appreciate Handel's pasticcios, and the latest […]

A Life On-Line: First night of Proms, the Simon Bolivar Orchestra, Samson and Delila in Flanders
[…] Carolina Eyck played the Doctor Who theme on one, definitely something to be seen as well as heard [Facebook]. Still on unusual instruments, Anneke Scott has been playing various ones in her collection, the most recent outing was a 1940s Walzerhorn, a type of French horn popular in the former Czechosloviakia, and here she played a beautiful piece Tre giorni son che Nina which is probably not by Pergolesi but may be by Vincenzo Legrenzo Ciampi (1719–1762). [YouTube] British Youth Opera's Summer Festival has been two weeks of on-line workshops, masterclasses, performances, mentoring and other training for a group of young opera professionals, the BYO's website has a lovely selection of snippets from the festival from casting director Sarah Playfair's wise words on the subjectivity of casting to director Max Webster coaching monologues, in this case part of Samuel Beckett's Endgame. These are not public performances but a lovely […]

While Mrs Bach was composing the Cello Suites...
[…] and a number of her celebrated recordings remain in the catalogue - see footer image. But she was also a talented composer; of her thirty-one documented compositions only eight are for organ, with the balance ranging from works for solo piano to an extended oratorio La Chanson de Roland. Her organ compositions are published and performed, but of her other output just one work, the Ballade, op. 12, for horn and piano, was published. Maurizio Ciampi's recording of Jeanne Demessieux's Six Etudes and Sept Méditations sur Le Saint Esprit are recommended for those wanting to explore her organ compositions, with the influence of Dupré, Cesar Frank and early Messiaen surfacing in these two works from the 1940s. In 1962 Jeanne Demessieux broke through another glass ceiling when she was appointed titular organist at the prestigious Madeleine in Paris, and in 1967 Decca signed her to record Messiaen's complete […]
