Cellist Adrian Fung - Afiara String Quartet The Women's Musical Club of Toronto is presenting the Afiara String Quartet in recital on Oct. 15th 1:30 pm at Walter Hall, Edward Johnson Building, University of Toronto. On the program are works by Grandjany, Mozetich, Beethoven, Renie and Tournier. Guest soloist is harpist Caroline Leonardelli. An interesting tidbit is the recent appointment of a member of Afiara, cellist Adrian Fung, by the Toronto Symphony Orchestra as its new Vice President of Innovation. Adriano Banchieri In 1568 Adriano Banchieri was born in Bologna, Italy. He founded the Accademia dei Floridi in Bologna and was one of the first to develop what would become known as “Madrigal Comedies” which took a string of madrigal pieces that together told a story. This is believed, by some, to be the precursor of opera. In 1695 Pietro Locatelli was born in Bergamo, Italy. In 1891 Marcel Grandjany was born in Paris, France. In 1897 Francesco Mignone was born in Sao Paolo, Brazil. In 1906 Victor Herbert operetta “The Red Mill” was premiered in Buffalo, N.Y. In 1912 Schoenberg’s “Five Orchestral Pieces” was premiered at a Proms concert in London, conducted by Sir Henry Wood.
