New Jersey Symphony. Xian Zhang, conductor; Tom Borrow, piano. March 14, 2024.
NJPAC, Newark, NJ. Orchestra (Seat H101, $46).At the conclusion of the concert. Notice on the far right the regular principal bass.ProgramNightVision (2001, rev. 2002) by Ludwig (b. 1974).Piano Concerto No. 24 (1786) in C Minor, K. 491 by Mozart (1756-1791).Symphony No. 5 in E Minor, Op. 64 by Tchaikovsky. It was a nice spring day. The cherry blossoms are in bloom. The Program Notes contains much praise for the two "classical" pieces for this after (concert start 1:30 pm). And its description of NightVision is quite interesting also. My first thoughts were the concert had the potential of being "great," but would the NJ Symphony be able to deliver?Ludwig's name is David Serkin Ludwig. He is Peter Serkin's nephew, and Rudolf Serkin's grandson. So quite a musical heritage. He is no slouch either, as he is Dean of Music at Julliard. (The others Deans head up dance and drama.) SCO/Kuusisto review – Grime and Clyne premieres plus Dolphin Boy and folk fiddle make for an inspiring evening
Queen’s Hall, EdinburghPekka Kuusisto’s residency with the Scottish Chamber Orchestra ended with an eclectic and joyful concert that included new works by Anna Clyne and Helen Grime and an interval DJ setA month-Long residency with the Scottish Chamber Orchestra by dynamic Finnish violinist and conductor Pekka Kuusisto is ending in a programme featuring two UK premieres – a violin concerto written for him by Anna Clyne and a song cycle composed by Helen Grime for the other featured soloist, soprano Ruby Hughes. Add in fiddler Aidan O’Rourke duetting with Kuusisto on some of the folk tunes used by Clyne in her five-movement work, Time and Tides, and an interval set on the decks by Andy Levy, AKA DJ Dolphin Boy, and it looked like a Long and rather eclectic evening. Instead it flowed with an easy sense of purpose.Grime sets three poems about happiness, Larkin’s joy in springtime,

A Long Road of Remembrance and Hope
The oratorio O Lungo Drom (The Long Road) is an authentic testimony of the Sinti and Roma people, whose journey since time immemorial has been shrouded by poetic and popular imagination. It finds its voice for the first time here directly through the words of Sinti/Roma poets and writers, set to music by Roma composer Ralf Yusuf Gawlick. This oratorio will receive its joint U.S. premières on April 5th at College of the Holy Cross and the 6th at Boston College, with soprano Clara Meloni, baritone Christoph Filler, cimbalomist László Rácz and the Alban Berg Ensemble Wien, the same cast performing on the world première recording recently released on Decca Eloquence Australia. Harpsichordist Peter Watchorn, a professor at Boston College and co-founder, executive producer and CEO of the record label Musica Omnia (which hosts seven Gawlick recordings), recently spoke with the composer. PW: In the past decade, you have shared your […]

Gavin Higgins becomes a Patron of Awards for Young Musicians
Ben Goldscheider, Gavin Higgins & London Chamber Orchestra at London premiere of Higgins' Horn Concerto(Photo: Jerome Weatherald)Composer Gavin Higgins, whose horn concerto was recently premiered by Ben Goldscheider [see my review of the London performance], and who is Composer-in-Association with the BBC National Orchestra of Wales, has become a Patron of music charity Awards for Young Musicians (AYM).AYM aims to ensure that family finances and other obstacles do not get in the way of musical talent by supporting young musicians from low income families, with funding and other help, and supporting music education through training, advocacy and research.Gavin Higgins was an early beneficiary of AYM, and he describes his new role with the organisation as something of a "full circle moment." Born into a brass-banding family, but a condition of receiving a full scholarship to study at Chetham’s School of Music was that he had to transition from brass-band instrument to French horn. AYM helped Higgins purchase […]
