Dr. Stan Ford: Christmas Letter 2019
[…] so much that he requested a few days just to stay home and relax. I was determined to make his visit a trip of a lifetime. My dear friend, Leslie, visited me for the 2nd time in August. We travelled throughout Germany and Italy together. We had a blast being treated as VIPs as we were given an exclusive tour of the famous “Reichstag”, the parliament premises in Berlin. Similar treatment was extended to us in Murano, Italy near Venice where we toured the unique island where exquisite art made of this treasured glass was produced. Tourism is booming like never before. Unlike years past, where one could visit famous sites in major cities and leisurely enter the premises without long waits, today, one must often make reservations, sometimes months in advance, to be allowed access into the site you wish to see. I experienced this several times this summer […]

Celebration time: Wagner’s Der Ring des Nibelungen coincided with the 140th anniversary of the Grand Théâtre de Genève
[…] lavishly-furnished interiors adorned with beautifully-designed ceilings such as Marc Chagall’s splendid offering at Opéra Garnier in Paris. It’s a joy to behold but so, too, is the ceiling of the Grand Théâtre. Appropriately entitled ‘Alto’ it was created by Kraków-born artist, Jacek Stryjenski. Romantically, I like to think that it caught the wandering eye of Wotan dreaming of his heavenly home! Mr Stryjenski (who died in his adopted home town of Geneva at the early age of 38) also designed much of the décor of the Geneva Puppet Theatre. Before the commencement of a three-year restoration programme, costing in the region of £50 million, the last production at the Grand Théâtre (December 2015) […]

On Italian men in their underpants
[…] to be Young Artists in Residence at their headquarters in Washington, D.C. What followed was a series of live performances interwoven with interviews. It was simultaneously frightening and comfortable – Fred remains the best interviewer I have ever had. Fred and I had a plan to wake early today and go to San Michele, the cemetery island, to find Stravinsky’s grave. We picked up some fresh flowers, and got on the vaporetto heading to Murano, the glass island. It was crowded – surprising for so early in the morning – and we noticed several widows in all black, clutching bouquets and walking sticks. Stravinsky is buried next to his wife, Vera, along a tall brick wall which offers shade. Their stones are not flashy – simple slabs – but the lettering of their names is Picasso-like -hand-laid in vibrant blue stone. We came back to Venice, had a gondola […]
