Recent performances by the National Youth Dance Company and the Royal Ballet School showcased dancers whose technique, physical commitment and emotional maturity belie their ageThe National Youth Dance Company (NYDC) is a remarkable project: an ever-changing group of dancers, mostly aged 16-19, who work with a different choreographer each year to develop a new performance. It’s a diverse company that integrates different body shapes, including disabled dancers, and different dance trainings, and they all bring impressive technique, full-on energy and a great sense of professionalism to the stage. This year’s show is Quartiers Paradis by choreographer Alesandra Seutin (whose background includes a specialism in contemporary African dance), and takes place at Bold Tendencies, a very hip performance space in a south London multi-storey car park – just the right place for such a youthful, raw, underground happening.

Royal Opera House; Queen Elizabeth Hall, LondonAn exemplary revival brings David Alden’s 2018 Wagner production into sharp focus. And an overlooked contemporary of Mozart’s is celebrated by Errollyn Wallen The swan-swastika banners, boots and guns in the Royal Opera’s 2018 staging of Wagner’s Lohengrin, though brilliantly done, had an air of theatrical platitude when new. Now back for its first revival, with an outstanding, watertight cast conducted by Jakub Hrůša, David Alden’s production has sharp immediacy. Empty facades of burnt-out buildings, which previously resembled bleak but elegant examples of constructivism in Paul Steinberg’s designs, now reflect the images we see daily in the news. A herald in leg brace, face bloodied, holds up a mirror to our tarnished world. Lohengrin (1850), a transitional work for Wagner in his long journey towards The Ring and Parsifal, is set against a backdrop of war. That tumult recedes in the face of the […]

Queen Elizabeth Hall, LondonThe story of the blind composer, singer and business woman Maria Theresia von Paradis is told in this lively but uneven chamber opera by Errollyn Wallen Experimental, disabled-led theatre company Graeae here give us their first opera. Composed by Errollyn Wallen to a libretto by Nicola Werenowska and Selina Mills, The Paradis Files deals with the life of Maria Theresia von Paradis (1759-1824), a blind composer, pianist, singer and teacher, feted Europe-wide in her day and admired by, among others, Salieri, Haydn and Mozart. Much of her music is lost, and history primarily remembers her for her parents’ unavailing search for a cure for her blindness, rather than for her own often considerable achievements. Wallen and her librettists attempt to redress the balance by giving us a portrait of a self-determined woman of considerable spirit and courage. The primary focus falls on the relationship between Theresia (

Maria Theresia von Paradis’s piano bewitched the Viennese court – but she was tormented by quacks proffering remedies she didn’t need. Now a disabled theatre team are turning her life into opera Millions across the world watched cellist Sheku Kanneh-Mason play at Megan and Harry’s wedding. But only a tiny fraction of those viewers would have known the haunting Sicilienne with which his performance begun, or the composer believed to have written it. Maria Theresia von Paradis, once the darling of the Viennese court, a blind piano prodigy, singer, composer and music professor who performed for royalty throughout Europe, has since been erased from history. “She was deeply respected by her contemporaries – Mozart, Salieri and Haydn,” says Selina Mills, co-librettist of a new chamber opera about her life, with music by
