Serious fire damage to Brussels concert hall and organ
The effects of yesterday’s fire at the Beaux Arts (Bozar) concert hall are now being assessed and the damage is extensive. The hall director Paul Dujardin was on the radio this morning saying that the steel and glass roof is unstable and could cave in after last night’s heavy rain. The composer Bernard Foccroulle, former […]

Parc Longchamp – Marseille I went in to the park a few days ago to watch my bf’s uncles Senegalese dance troupe practice. It was a lovely day (and all around town was crazy due to the filming of a new Jean Dujardin film “La French “) and it was nice to relax in the park. It is in a not super nice part of town. I mean, not crime-wise, it just isn’t nearly as pretty as the bougoise areas of La Plage David, etc. There is a lot to see here and really, it is a nice slice of nature in the middle of concrete Marseille! Paris this weekend … 25,000 runners. […]

Progress Report 15: Santa Fe Trails
[…] TV series, to say nothing of greeting cards and school supplies. An animated series of Lucky Luke has been a staple of French TV (and in-flight entertainment on airplanes!) for years; during the glut of Goscinny movies, we got a new animated feature film, starring the voice of Lambert Wilson as the voice of the eponymous hero, a laconic cowboy gunslinger who draws faster than his own shadow. And in a live-action feature, Jean Dujardin, Oscar-winning star of The Artist, took the role. The 1990s live-action TV series, largely a German effort, may have represented the kind of competition that the copyright holders preferred to squelch: in any case, the principal trace I’ve seen of the show is a couple of Polaroids showing Madeline in her costume as Esmeralda, a Gypsy. There’s a great deal more I hope to learn about Madeline’s time in Santa Fe: if you […]

[…] of Streep. I also thought that The Artist, which I liked very much, was not the best picture I saw that was released last year. That would probably be Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy, though I freely admit that if you hadn't read the book or seen the great BBC TV series with Alec Guiness as George Smiley, you would not have had a chance of following the plot. As much as I liked Jean Dujardin, who is utterly charming and obviously an extremely talented guy, Gary Oldman's performance as Smiley was a towering achievement. For that matter, the whole cast was so strong that I would not have been surprised by Best Supporting Actor nominations for Mark Strong (Jim Prideaux), Tom Hardy (Ricky Tarr), or Benedict Cumberbatch (Peter Guillam). In the Best Supporting Actress category, well, I'm sorry it wasn't the wonderful Janet McTeer, who walked off with […]
