Das Jahr: OAE commissions four women composers to respond to Fanny Hensel's piano cycle

There is also the issue of confidence in approach to larger-scale forms. This weekend (21 April 2024), for instance, the Engegård Quartet will be playing Fanny Hensel's Quartet in E flat at Conway Hall [see website for details, including my pre-concert talk]. She only wrote one mature quartet, it had one private performance after which her brother Felix took exception to her rather free approach to form and she never wrote another one. Marriner 100: the Academy of St Martin in the Fields celebrates the centenary of its founder
Sir Neville MarrinerNext month, the Academy of St Martin in the Fields is celebrating the centenary of its founder Sir Neville Marriner (1924-2016) with a programme events beginning on what would have been Sir Neville's 100th birthday (15 April 2024), with concerts celebrating both Marriner and the orchestra's long-standing relationships with other musicians.Things begin with the Academy of St Martin in the Fields at its spiritual home, St Martin in the Fields, with direction shared between Joshua Bell, Tomo Keller and Jaime Martin in a programme of Handel, Mozart, Haydn, Vaughan Williams and Errollyn Wallen. BBC Ten Pieces celebrated its 10th anniversary last week by announcing a new collection of ten works by women composers across eight centuries.
Sally Beamish, Hildegard von Bingen, Margaret Bonds, Lili Boulanger, Reena Esmail, Cassie Kinoshi, Marianna Martines, Laura Shigihara, Errollyn Wallen, Judith WeirBuilding on ten years opening up the world of classical music to 7-14 year olds, BBC music education initiative Ten Pieces celebrated its 10th anniversary last week by announcing a new collection of ten works by women composers across eight centuries.
