Anglais - Lisette Oropesa Dazzles as Violetta in La traviata at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden
[…] walked away, and everything comes to a head when he angrily confronts her at Violetta’s friend Flora’s party. He eventually discovers the truth as his father also regrets pushing them apart, but by this time Violetta is terribly ill and, though the pair are finally reconciled, she dies in his arms. There is much debate over how autobiographical Verdi’s creation is because he was himself judged by society for living with the soprano, Giuseppina Strepponi, out of wedlock from the late 1840s (they were married in 1859). However, when the chorus suddenly condemns Alfredo for his treatment of Violetta at Flora’s party it is certainly tempting to see this as the composer’s way of getting the people to take his own side. Richard Eyre’s production for the Royal Opera, revived here by Pedro Ribeiro, began life in 1994, and many subtle touches are to be found within […]

I need a subject that is grandiose, impassioned & original: the influence of Meyerbeer & French Grand Opera on the operas of Verdi
[…] new and the old together in an unsatisfactory way. Jerusalem had only a moderate run, and at later performances it was cut to just three acts, the crusaders' march suppressed, the last scene omitted, and a vulgar ballet added; Verdi was very angry. But a follow-up was planned, though the events of the Revolution of 1848 and the overthrow of the July Monarchy would rather delay things.Another attraction of Paris in the 1840s was that Giuseppina Strepponi was there, and it is speculated that their relationship developed during that time. In fact, there is a manuscript of a love duet from Jerusalem with alternative words in her hand. Verdi and Strepponi would see Alexandre Dumas’ play, La Dame aux Camelias in late 1851 or early 1852 and this gave Verdi the idea for La Traviata.Louise Miller, the 1853 French revision of Luisa Miller was a failure, but the Paris Opera commissioned […]

Sound quality: Fairly good mono. Some background hiss comes and goes, presumably reflecting the qualities of the original matrices. Voices are clearly caught and generally given predominance over the orchestra. At times, individual voices, particularly that of Silveri, seem to be located in an overly resonant space. Documentation: Libretto in Italian. Timed track listings. Graphics in the booklet include portraits of Verdi, Giuseppina Strepponi, the first Abigaille who many years later became Verdi's second wife and of the librettist, Temistocle Solera, a Frasier Crane lookalike, who was rumored to have seduced a queen of Spain.
