Leipzig 300: Dunedin Consort celebrates Bach's appointment at St Thomas' Church with his music alongside that of his rivals
[…] Consort are celebrating (slightly late) the 300th anniversary of Bach's appointment with a concert which combines music by Telemann and Graupner along with cantatas from Bach's first cantata cycle for Leipzig. The programme includes Telemann’s Concerto for viola performed by Dunedin Consort’s principal viola John Crockatt, and Bach’s Gleichwie der Regen und Schnee vom Himmel fällt written for four violas! Joining the ensemble are soloists Julia Doyle (soprano), Helen Charlston (mezzo- soprano), Nicholas Mulroy (tenor), and Matthew Brook (baritone) with concerts at Perth Concert Hall on Wednesday 7 February, The Queen's Hall, Edinburgh on Thursday 8 February, and Wigmore Hall, London on Friday 9 February.Full details from the Dunedin Consort's website.

The Dartington International Summer School Foundation creates new Music Summer School & Festival at Gresham's School in Norfolk
The chapel at Gresham's SchoolWith the collapse of the Summer School at Dartington, the Dartington International Summer School Foundation, a charity which was supported the Summer School since 1976, has created a new incarnation in Norfolk.The Music Summer School and Festival will run at Gresham's School in Norfolk from 27 July to 10 August 2024 with a wide range of participatory courses along with a full programme of concerts, talks and events. Courses include choral singing and vocal music; orchestras and ensembles; individual instrumental and vocal classes and workshops; medieval, renaissance and baroque ensembles; jazz and improvisation; wind band and string ensemble; chamber music; and composition.Conductor Andrew Griffiths will be working on Bach's St John Passion, and conductor Jane Glover works in Mozart's Requiem. Wagner was something of an ongoing theme for 2023, including Dresden Music Festival's historically informed Das Rheingold and a remarkable performance of Die Walküre from London Opera Company. Handel masterpieces included Jephtha at Covent Garden with Allan Clayton and Saul at the Komische Oper, Berlin with Luca Tittoto, plus more of a rarity, Arminio, from the Jette Parker Young Artists at Covent Garden.We also caught Allan Clayton in a remarkable reinvention of Britten's Peter Grimes at the Paris Opera.
