A Life On-Line: Dreaming of the Silver Screen in Montpellier, Weber's Euryanthe in Vienna, Tippett's The Ice Break in Birmingham,
[…] over the problems of the rather schematic nature of Tippett's dramaturgy. The result was a thrilling vindication of the work, though I wonder whether it will ever work in the opera house; the piece seemed designed for this sort of immersive, filmic production. Vick received a committed and thrilling performance from Nadine Benjamin, Ross Ramgobin (the other naked singer this week), Stephanie Corley, Chrystal Williams, Ta'u Pupu'a, John Colyn Gyeantey, Adam Green, Anna Harvey, and Meili Li with Andrew Gourlay conducting and a remarkable degree of community involvement. Britten's A Midsummer Night's Dream in Montpellier (Photo Mark Ginot) In November 2019 I had a more enjoyable interview with counter-tenor James Hall, one on of the things he mentioned was Ted Huffman's production of Britten's A Midsummer Night's Dream which debuted in Montpellier last year and travelled to the Deutsche Oper, Berlin this January. And there was a splendid mezzo Bethan Langford with considerable expressive powers who was a rather tall Hermia (taller than her Helena!), as well as a resonant 2nd Lady, and a delectable Béatrice. Exceptional comic timing was shown by David Ireland, a hilarious Notary in Don Pasquale, as well as giving us a strongly delineated Nick Shadow and a charming Truffaldino. I could go on.........there were great contributions also from Jennie Witton, Meili Li, Milan Siljanow........to name but three more. Suffice to say that it was an exceptionally good evening and I for one will look forward to seeing these young people next year in full productions. This is a strong vintage.

It is a great discovery and uncompromisingly directed by Rodula Gaitanou it makes its gory effect most potently. This is the Salome story anew - with bloodied corpse as well as severed head. You have been warned. There was a very fine young counter tenor Meili Lei in the title role. A hugely attractive voice promises much for his future. The Herod was Joseph Padfield who also appeared briefly in The Cooper. His stamina in this testing role was remarkable, and he commanded the stage outstandingly by any standard - he must be marked out for a good future. The bloodthirsty Salome was convincingly taken by Lauren Zolezzi, coming through the test of playing a somewhat wayward and complex character […]
