Last weekend, I went away with a group of friends I’ve known since uni. Every year we go away to a different city – first Amsterdam, then Berlin, and this time, Prague! This is the first in a mini-series of Prague posts that I’ll be sharing over the next few weeks. The capital city of the Czech Republic, Prague has some truly amazing architecture and an incredibly rich history. At one point it was also the capital city of the Holy Roman Empire, ruled over by Charles IV, who transformed Prague into one of the most important cities in Europe. Throughout its history, the city bore witness to times of intense turbulence, with wars, religious conflict and foreign occupation (by both the Nazi’s and then by communist Russia). It also became a centre of culture, with astronomers, writers and other important figures all making their homes there – from […]

MOVIE REVIEW: 2001: A Space Odyssey (2008 blu ray)
Happy LeBrain Day! It’s my birthday. Sometimes on my birthday, I like to just spend an afternoon watching a favourite movie. This is one. 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968, from the 2011 Stanley Kubrick Visionary Filmmaker Blu Ray Collection, Warner Bros.) Once upon a time, when the year 2001 seemed aeons away, director Stanley Kubruck (Dr. Strangelove) contacted author Arthur C. Clarke (Childhood’s End) to discuss making “the proverbial good science fiction movie”. Both were sick of films that passed for science fiction, but were actually monster movies set in space, or just replaced science with fantasy. The result was 2001: A Space Odyssey, the film, and a companion book of the same name which is actually a completely different animal. The film — striking, innovative, visually engrossing, ambiguous, and scientifically solid — is as good today as it was in 1968, even […]

Immortal beloved
Janácek’s Makropulos Case has only chalked up thirteen performances in three previous runs at the Met and will have just five more this season. Try to catch at least one. Emilia Marty, the glamorous diva even more ageless and immortal than most divas, is a role Karita Mattila has finally and happily taken on after long experience of the same composer’s moving, far less mercurial Jenúfa and Ká?a Kabanová. Marty/Makropulos profits from Mattila’s feline allure, her still powerful soprano – and the athleticism of her zaftig physique: No Bollywood anorexic here, but a Mitteleuropaische Venus. Few opera composers have ever suited her so well as does Janácek’s jagged lyricism. (Mattila has, of late, taken to singing Italian operas far less sympathetic to her gifts.) Janácek holds Marty’s big moment back until the opera’s conclusion, but she is central to all that has preceded it. Mattila delights in flashing changes of […]
