Telling tales of love: Ailish Tynan and James Baillieu at Wigmore Hall
[…] period. 'Gruss' was certainly fresh and engaging; a little gem that was a lovely way to begin the recital. I have heard Tynan sing these songs before, but that was back in 2020 when she did so to an empty hall and we listened/watched remotely so it was lovely to encounter them in person. 'Dereinst, Gedanke mein' was thoughtful and rather interior, never rising too much, it ended on a quietly transcendent note. The lively, folk-ish 'Lauf der Welt' showcased Tynan's delightful storytelling abilities, and throughout the evening there were plenty of occasions when we felt her eager to tell us a new tale. 'Die verschwiegene Nachtigall' began with a magical piano prelude, the opening was fresh and clear with an engaging sense of the story. Tynan and Baillieu made the melodic felicity of 'Zur Rosenzeit' rather touching, rising to greater intensity then shading off until Tynan's voice was just a […]

The undeservedly neglected lieder of Josephine Lang are at the centre of this lovely recital from Scottish-German mezzo-soprano Catriona Morison
[…] quite a variety of poets, Heinrich Heine, a translation by Emanuel Geibel of a 16th century poem by Cristobal de Castillejo, Johann Ludwig Uhland, Walter von der Vogelweide, Goethe and Friedrich Martin von der Bodenstedt. 'Gruss' starts things off in a delightfully bright manner, and both Morison and Martineau have a spring in their step. 'Dereinst, Gedanke mein' (from the Spanisches Liederbuch and set also by Schumann and by Wolf) is more inward and thoughtful. 'Lauf der Welt' has an engaging charm about it whilst the piano rhythms could not but be by Grieg. This is also true of 'Die verschiegene Nachtigall', which sets words by the 13th-century Minnesinger Walther von der Vogelweide. Here the vocal line is pure Grieg, sung by Morison with engaging simplicity, showing that whilst the texts belong to the German lied tradition these songs are anything but. 'Zu Rosenzeit' is a touching exploration of lost […]

New music indeed, then, however distant 2018—Theresa May: remember her?—may seem to those of us bewildered and exhausted by the current plague. I hope I shall be forgiven for any errors I might make, confronted with such a wealth of new sounds and their organisation, without so much as a programme note, coronavirus precluding such, let alone a score. Is that not, however, […]

A journey over the rainbow: Ailish Tynan & Iain Burnside take us from mature Grieg to Harold Arlen
[…] Tynan and Burnside opened with Grieg's Six Songs, Op. 48, songs to German texts which he wrote in the late 1880. These were his first settings of German texts for over 20 years and in them Grieg, who trained in Leipzig, came close to the style of the German lied. The first, 'Gruß' was lyrically impulsive whilst the second 'Dereinst, Gedanke mein' was thoughtful, yet the performance from Tynan and Burnside was still vivid. 'Lauf der Welt' had a perky charm to it, whilst, 'Die verschwiegene Nachtigall' was intimate and engaging. The touching 'Zur Rosenzeit' was full of dark melancholy and 'Ein Traum', the best known song of the group started magically and ended with Tynan full of rapture. Throughout the performances from Tynan and Burnside were full of character, capturing the songs' freshness. Next came a group of Hugo Wolf's settings of Goethe. Wolf's Gedichte von J.W. […]
