Here are several upcoming livestreams that are awfully close to the don't-miss category for me. First, we've got hot and cold running Trittico performances, then a pair of great works by Philip Glass. In 2009, San Francisco Opera performed a modern-dress Il Trittico with Patricia Racette in the three leading female roles. She was especially great in Suor Angelica, where Ewa Podles was her terrifying aunt, and in Gianni Schicchi, which I think is the funniest hour of opera ever written. Her accomplices included the wonderful Paolo Gavanelli as Michele in Il Tabarro and the title character in Gianni Schicchi, Brandon Jovanovich, David Lomeli, Meredith Arwady, Andrea Silvestrelli, Catherine Cook, and others, many others. The production came from NYCO, so the likelihood is that it is gone gone gone. I loved this production so much I saw it three times. SFO streams this production from their home page on Saturday, June 13, at 10 AM Pacific Time. […]

[…] even harder. I thought, “I have to be that one, or that one or two.” I wanted to be that minority of singers who made it. Her talk inspired me not just that summer at Merola, but beyond. Only one or two? Meachem was in the 2003 summer program, which had 29 singers, stage directors, and coaches. The following singers from that year went gone on to solid professional careers: Jane Archibald Meredith Arwady Joshua Bloom Arturo Chacon-Cruz Nikki Einfeld Thomas Glenn Joseph Kaiser (then a baritone, now a tenor) Lucas Meachem Elza van den Heever Some of these singers are bigger stars than others, and there may well be other singers with solid local careers, but that's way more than one or two. Perhaps the Merola program was especially good at talent-spotting that year, or perhaps as a group they just worked harder, but that's a […]

Gaffigan/Echalaz, Sledge, Morley, Majeski, GilfreyMost exciting, to me, is the new production of Doctor Atomic. I hope it won't be a duplicate of the SF production. After that, Ariadne. Might see Butterfly as it has been ten years. Candide, maybe, but there will be a good semi-staged version at SFS next season.

[…] following Allen’s unscripted surprise denouement. That ending has been given away in many reviews and is a controversial choice; I approved. The supporting cast is largely made up of young singers, and there is an appealing make-believe quality to aging effects (Simone’s unconvincing wig and moustache, for example), as there is in good sketch comedy. //www.youtube.com/watch?v=cWdodQVBXlw The cast around the veteran star enters into a spirit of teamwork, but there are several standouts. Meredith Arwady, a contralto of Blytheian physique with a voice of impressive size and depth, is a dominating, very nasty Zita. Bass-baritone Craig Colclough makes a dignified foil as her fellow elder, the pompous Simone. Stacey Tappan (Nella) and Peabody Southwell (La Ciesca) combine with Arwady to blandishing effect in the trio accompanying Schicchi’s dressing-up. Baritone Kihun Yoon sings very beautifully and makes a strong impression as Nicolao, the notary. Bass-baritone E. Scott Levin‘s Maestro Spinelloccio […]
