Something astonishing: Olivia Fuchs' new production of Britten's Death in Venice for Welsh National Opera involved a collaboration with circus arts, NoFit State
Britten: Death in Venice - Mark Le Brocq, Antony CésarWelsh National Opera (Photo Johann Persson)Britten: Death in Venice; Mark Le Brocq, Roderick Williams, Alexander Chance, Antony César, Diana Salles, director: Olivia Fuchs, conductor: Leo Hussain; Welsh National Opera in collaboration with NotFit State; Wales Millennium CentreReviewed 9 March 2024Bringing music drama and circus arts together in Britten's last opera to create something unforgettable anchored by Mark Le Brocq's assumption of the title roleBritten's Death in Venice involves the interaction between two worlds, those of Aschenbach and Tadzio, sung music drama and dance. A metaphor for Aschenbach's artistic and personal journey, the exact nature of these two worlds helps govern our perception of whether Aschenbach's relationship with Tazio is entirely in the older man's head or something rooted in reality. For Olivia Fuchs' new production of Britten's Death in Venice, presented by Welsh National Opera at Wales Millennium Centre, Cardiff (seen 9 March 2024), and then on […]

[…] to explore the highways and byways. Two discs came to my attention this year, both exploring repertoire that is not always obvious. On Exploration from Hungoroton, flautist Noémi Győri and pianist Suzana Bartal present pieces by Beethoven and Schubert alongside works by Leopoldine Blahetka and Francois Borne. Whilst To the Northern Star on Resonus Classics from duo Flauguissimo (Yu-Wei Hu flute, Johan Löfving theorbo & baroque guitar) and friends (Magdalena Loth-Hill violin, Emily Atkinson soprano, Henrik Persson viola da gamba) explores the chamber music of the 18th-century Swedish composer Johan Helmich Roman.Győri and Bartal's disc is deliberately playful and light, involving the variation form in all its guises. They begin with Schubert's Introduction and Variations on 'Trockne Blumen' from Die schöne Müllerin, op. posth. 160, D. 802, written in 1824 for a flute-playing friend, Ferdinand Bogner, a professor at the Vienna conservatory and back in 1815 the two had played together […]

Jerry Herman & Harvey Fierstein's La Cage aux Folles at Regents Park Open Air Theatre
Jerry Herman & Harvey Fierstein: La Cage aux FollesCarl Mullaney - Regents Park Open Air Theatre (Photo Johan Persson)Jerry Herman & Harvey Fierstein: La Cage aux Folles; Carl Mullaney, Billy Carter, Ben Culleton, director: Timothy Sheader; Regents Park Open Air TheatreA production that brings out the personal element amidst the glamour with terrific solo performances and a strong chorusHaving followed up his hits Hello, Dolly! (1964) and Mame (1966) with a sequence of interesting but cult musicals (Dear World, Mack & Mabel, The Grand Tour), in writing his 1983 show, La Cage aux Folles, composer Jerry Herman was deliberately aiming at an optimistic song-and-dance entertainment. Thus despite the involvement of gay-activist Harvey Fierstein, writing the book, and the political Arthur Laurents, as producer, the resulting musical has many traditional elements of a Broadway musical and despite weaknesses has gained far more currency than a sharper, more political show might have. What La Cage aux Folles did was […]
