Trilogy Thrills, Madame White Snake Still Shines
[…] the purely acoustic harp, the balance of the guitar was problematic at times, creating some moments of unfortunate cover of the singers. This is a good opera, but it’s a question as to whether it stands alone. Its story and music seems compelled to be coupled with the rest. As I knew the day was continuing, it was difficult not to hear its end awaiting more to come. Susannah Biller (White Snake) and Michael Maniaci (Xiao Qing/Green Snake) (James Daniel photo) Zhou Long’s Madame White Snake is impeccable. Without question, Long’s greatest success here is his ability to manipulate tension – both harmonically and rhythmically – to stimulate undeniable emotional pulls in the listener. When his chords are dissonant, they are voiced in a way that allows them to breathe while still feeling the palpable tension within. He creates clear motivic elements, such as the rhythmically metallic clamoring […]

A Roman Odyssey Avoids Shoals
[…] a single Affekt or emotional range, with the more important singers given a wider variety of expressive types. . Castrati were the highest paid singers until the mid-eighteenth century, when they were gradually replaced by prima donnas in trouser roles. Brenda Patterson (mezzo) sings Ezio This early masterpiece of Mozart’s began by bowing to Milanese taste for elaborate arias, but as he moved into the later acts, he seemed more and more to have been influenced by Gluck’s earliest reform operas, including Alceste. Still, it is a superbly crafted opera seria, by far the best work that Mozart wrote during his youthful travels to Italy. Michael Maniaci (countertenor) essays Ceciclio; Katy Lindhart (soprano); makes her Boston debut as Giunia; Sara Heaton (soprano) impersonates Celia; Yeghishe Maucharyan (tenor) plays Lucio Silla; and Joanna Mongiardo (soprano) sings Cinna. Each spring Odyssey Opera offers a view to the future in the back of the program for its festival—an announcement of the opera to be given its concert performance in the early fall. No hint as of yet, except that Gil Rose has often commented […]
