Back with vengeance: Nina Stemme in Richard Strauss' Elektra at Covent Garden
[…] most intensely disturbed that I have seen, other singers have made her upset over her dreams go really deep, but there was no questioning of the vividness of Mattila's performance and the lovely way she goaded Stemme's Elektra. The smaller roles were well taken and equally strongly presented. Lukasz Golinski was a robust, rough-hewn Orest, holding himself in and seemingly at the end of his tether. It was a moving yet vigorous performance, aided by Michael Mofidian's nervy and anxious companion. Charles Workman was a handsomely glamorous as Agisth, a character you trust no further than you could throw him; you could see this Klytämnestra and Ägisth as media darlings, all surface and no depth. The maids (Noa Beinart, Veena Kama-Makia, Gabriele Kupsyte, Ella Taylor, Valentina Puskas) at the opening were well depicted, creating a vivid sense of place with Lee Bisset rather luxury casting as the Overseer. Marianne Cotterill and Amanda […]

Pelléas, Rusalka, Eugene Onegin, and Iphigénie en Tauride spring immediately to mind. Others differ strongly, I know, so it is probably more a matter of taste […]

Alcina and Arminio to Kurt Cobain and Kaija Saariaho to Werther and Wozzeck, the Royal Opera House's new season
[…] the title role), Gwyn Hughes Jones, Freddie De Tommaso and Erwin Schrott. It is great to see Paula Murrihy back, this time as Elvira in Mozart's Don Giovanni to Luca Micheletti's Don. Lovely to see that Ailish Tynan pops up as First Lady in The Magic Flute and Berta in The Barber of Seville. It is in the smaller roles that some of the most satisfying casting comes. Besides welcome returns for Jette Parker graduates including Dominic Sedgwick, Thomas Atkins, Michael Mofidian, Blaise Malaba, we also look forward to Ross Ramgobin as Schaunard (La Boheme) and Gamekeeper (Rusalka), Rowan Pierce as Papagena (The Magic Flute), Sam Furness and Rosie Aldridge as Andres and Margret in Wozzeck, Ella Taylor as Tebaldo in Don Carlo (a strong revival with Brian Jagde, and Lise Davidsen), Anna Stephany as Cherubino in Le nozze di Figaro. Rooted in Scottish soil: an exploration of the songs by Scotland's woefully ignored son, Erik Chisholm
Erik Chisholm songs; Mhairi Lawson, Nicky Spence, Michael Mofidian, Iain Burnside; Delphian Reviewed by Robert Hugill on 30 July 2021 Star rating: 5.0 (★★★★★) An exploration of Erik Chisholm's songs proves a richly rewarding experience with three Scottish singers relishing both music and textScotland is still in the process of making musical restitution to its woefully ignored son, Erik Chisholm. Whilst much is available on disc, including his opera Simoon [see my review], there is plenty which is unrecorded (there are nine operas in total). A disc from Delphian gives us a chance to explore Erik Chisholm's songs performed by Mhairi Lawson (soprano), Nicky Spence (tenor), Michael Mofidian (bass-baritone) and Iain Burnside (piano). The songs prove to be something of a surprise for anyone expecting a contemporary 20th century take on the song genre. It is worth whilst bearing in mind the comparison of Chisholm to Bartok, […]
