From Early Music to contemporary: the Royal Festival Hall organ is 70 and organist James McVinnie is celebrating with a Southbank Centre residency
[…] crises that the arts are facing. So the hall and the organ are both a great enterprise and an ideal for us today. The result is an organ that James sees as ideal for music from the 16th and 17th centuries, anything that has counterpoint including Bach and French classical. James' recital on the afternoon of 23 March 2024 has a programme of the type of music that Downes would have had in his ears, Sermisy, Praetorius, Sweelinck, Pachelbel, Böhm, Buxtehude and Bach [see Southbank Centre website]. But in his second recital on the evening of 23 March, James is exploring the other end of the repertoire with a performance of Infinity Gradient, the 2021 tour-de-force for organ and 100 speakers by American composer and sound artist Tristan Perich. James wanted to give a pair of concerts to show how adaptable the organ is, from Early Music to the present day. […]

Luigi Dallapiccola, Part I, 2024
This Week in Classical Music: February 26, 2024. Missed dates and Luigi Dallapiccola. For the last three weeks, we’ve been preoccupied with Alban Berg, and we feel good about it: Berg was a revolutionary composer (not by his constitution but by the nature of his creative talent) and he should be celebrated, even if our time, philistine and woke, doesn’t suit him well. The problem we have is that we missed several very significant anniversaries: for example, George Frideric Handel‘s – he was born on February 23rd of 1685; also, one of the most interesting German composers of the 16th century, Michael Praetorius, was born on February 15th of 1571. We missed the birthday of Francesco Cavalli, a very important composer in the history of opera, on February 14th of 1602. Two famous Italians were also born during those three weeks, Archangelo Corelli on February 17th of 1653 and Luigi Boccherini, […]

Deus ex machina
[…] an old priory destroyed by different wars, abandoned and restored by the craftsman since 1978.The monastic community at Le Barroux has released a highly-recommended double CD of the Aubertin organ played by guests Nigel de Gaunt-Allcoat, Simone Pedroni, Maurits Bunt, and Iain Simcock who advised on the construction of the new organ . The CD's repertoire avoids the 'organ play any music' by with an eclectic programme of Jacques Boyyin, François Couperin, Jean-Adam Guilain, Pierre Cochereau, Michael Praetorius, Jan Pieterszoon Sweelinck, Nicolaus Bruhns, and J.S. Bach. (Quiz time: which is the only 20th century composer in that list?)As well as guesting on that double CD the young Dutch Maurits Bunt organist has also released a solo album of similarly eclectic repertoire. Recorded on the organ of Cathédrale Notre-Dame de l'Assomption de Rodez which originally dates from 1627 and is ideally suited to for French baroque works, the programme features music by Louis-Nicolas […]
