Jacques Cohen: The Lady of Satis House - Marie Vassiliou at Tete-a-Tete: The Opera Festival in 2012 (Photo: Claire Shovelton)Jacques Cohen's operatic monodrama The Lady of Satis House premiered in 2012. A commission from Bill Bankes-Jones' Tete-a-Tete: The Opera Festival, it was directed by Joe Austin, designed by Emily Harwood and performed by soprano Marie Vassiliou and the Piatti Quartet. 2012 was also the bicentenary of Charles Dickens' birth and faced with writing the opera in six weeks, Jacques chose Miss Havisham from Great Expectations as the subject, drawing his text from Dickens' book.Jacques Cohen (Photo: Lester Barnes)Now, some 12 years after those first performances, the work has appeared on disc, on the Meridian label, again performed by Marie Vassiliou with the Tippett Quartet. The disc also features two of Jacques' works for string quartet, When the Bough Breaks: Three Lullabies for String Quartet and From Behind Glass: Tone Poem for […]

Horns galore: incandescent playing from Ben Goldscheider in the London premiere of Gavin Higgins' terrific new concerto
[…] of the first movement include a long rhapsodic cadenza-like section for Goldscheider over sustained orchestral textures enlivened with what I thought of as jungle noises. Certainly, the forest of Higgins' imagination was a richly vivid place. There was a general feeling of movement upwards towards the end of the movement, with more athletic writing for the soloist and some wonderful duelling with the orchestral horns. There were moments when the textures made me think of Tippett (no bad thing), as well as, ultimately, a proper cadenza for Goldscheider. With Overstorey we were high up, with magical sounds suspended in the orchestra (no bass support at the beginning). Over this was a gorgeous solo horn cantilena, with Goldscheider and Higgins between them spinning a lovely long line. The orchestral horns had their moment here, without the soloist, but Goldscheider returned with more rhapsodic writing, again the orchestral colours and timbres underneath keeping us on […]

Identity, displacement and homesickness: Raymond Yiu's new violin concerto inspired by the experiences of Chinese violinist and composer, Ma Sicong
[…] of the movements. The quotation of Ma Sicong’s Nostalgia is most obvious in this movement. In fact the main motif of the whole work, the five-note sequence E-F-sharp-D-B-A’ is based on the opening of Nostalgia - is clearly heard at the opening of this movement. After the cadenza after the climax, the melody of third movement comes back as a counterpoint to Ma Sicong’s Nostalgia before the music dies away.Wednesday 20 March 2024 - Michael Tippett: The Midsummer Marriage - Ritual Dances, Raymond Yiu: Violin Concerto, Beethoven: Symphony No. 7 - Esther Yoo, BBC Symphony Orchestra, Sir Andrew Davis - Barbican Centre
