Few traces left of Huguette’s great recorded legacy
A cri-de-coeur from the French harpsichordist Orhan Memed: I’m one of the many students of Huguette Dreyfus whom Jory Vinikour mentions in his touching tribute and who finds himself utterly at a loss to imagine the musical world without her presence. I feel compelled to write to point out with regret how few of her recordings have been reissued. A quick search on the ‘net brings up very little, with only the Bartok and the Bach Partitas released in the last 10 years. I am probably one of the few who has in his possession the list that Huguette kept of her complete discography and I wanted to share it with you…in the hope that readers would see not only how extensive but also how varied it is… and alas how unlucky we are not to have the opportunity to hear these recordings. The Haydn Trios with Eduard Melkus, […]

Yet Another Schuller Facet
[…] from 1983 until 2002, and volunteered as artistic director on numerous occasions. He listened to scores of recordings submitted by applicants and spent hours consulting with his colleagues to select finalists for the auditions. During his tenure as chair of the jury, he ran more than 30 auditions in New York City and several in Paris. It was a marvel to witness him lead deliberations with jurors like Jacob Avshalomov, Bethany Beardslee, Martin Bookspan, Michel Debost, John de Lancie, André Emelianoff, Margo Garrett, Byron Janis, Gilbert Kalish, Louis Krasner, Mark Kroll, David Leisner, Sol Schoenbach, Lucy Shelton, Russell Sherman, Joel Smirnoff, and Frederica von Stade. Despite strong differences of opinion, he managed to achieve consensus, selecting yet another group of stellar artists. Schuller didn’t ask for much, just a ham and cheese on rye mit pickle. You can bet he wasn’t happy the one time I forgot the pickle! At […]

Lessons in expression from Japan: spiritual connection, personal style, and hospitality (Japan Trip Log: Day 3 continued)
[…] they attract many students who end up just playing like them and never finding their own means of expression. He said he could even tell who a player had studied with based on how they sound. This was a cautionary tale for me. The flute world alone is saturated with superstar players and teachers. James Galway, Jeanne Baxtresser, Carol Wincenc, Marina Piccinini, Emmanuel Pahud, Mathieu Dufour, Jim Walker, Julius Baker, William Bennett, Leone Buyse, Michel Debost, Rhonda Larson, Gary Shocker, Marcel Moyse, Jean-Pierre Rampal, I could go on. It would be very easy to get caught up in someone else’s personality and lose one’s self. The Komuso said that I had to learn the style by imitation but that eventually I would have to find my own way. We learn how to live from our parents and people around us but we ultimately must find our own path. To […]
