Organ Reborn! Norwich Cathedral Organ Festival: A new music festival for Norwich
[…] choirs of Ely and Peterborough cathedrals to deliver a Three Choirs Special in what promises a thrilling and telling programme of choral favourites. There’ll also be a school’s programme running throughout the week, a family-friendly ‘Battle of the Organs’ concert and a silent movie complete with ‘live’ organ accompaniment. All these events will run alongside our daily schedule of choral services, one of which will be broadcast ‘live’ on BBC Radio 3 during festival week.’ The Dean of Norwich, the Very Revd Dr Andrew Braddock, said: ‘Norwich Cathedral is delighted that the festival will celebrate the amazing breadth and diversity of which organ music is capable. Across a whole range of styles and performances, the festival invites the wider community to experience organ music in all its versatile brilliance.’ The festival will open in style on Saturday, 6 July, 7pm, with Norwich Cathedral Choir joining forces with the choirs of Ely and […]

New Jersey Symphony. Xian Zhang, conductor; Tom Borrow, piano. March 14, 2024.
NJPAC, Newark, NJ. Orchestra (Seat H101, $46).At the conclusion of the concert. Notice on the far right the regular principal bass.ProgramNightVision (2001, rev. 2002) by Ludwig (b. 1974).Piano Concerto No. 24 (1786) in C Minor, K. 491 by Mozart (1756-1791).Symphony No. 5 in E Minor, Op. 64 by Tchaikovsky. It was a nice spring day. The cherry blossoms are in bloom. The Program Notes contains much praise for the two "classical" pieces for this after (concert start 1:30 pm). And its description of NightVision is quite interesting also. My first thoughts were the concert had the potential of being "great," but would the NJ Symphony be able to deliver?Ludwig's name is David Serkin Ludwig. He is Peter Serkin's nephew, and Rudolf Serkin's grandson. So quite a musical heritage. He is no slouch either, as he is Dean of Music at Julliard. (The others Deans head up dance and drama.) This 7-minute piece was […]

Celebrating Lutheran Master’s 339th Birthday
[…] perform Bach’s French Suite No. 6 in E Major at 2:30pm upon First Lutheran’s Steinway model M. No celebration of Bach’s music would be complete without at least one cantata, and this year’s BBB features two. At 3:45, baritone Richard Giarusso performs an old friend, Bach’s solo cantata BWV 82 Ich habe genug, accompanied by a small ensemble. Giarusso is no stranger to the Boston musical scene, having studied at Harvard and now serving as Dean of Academic Affairs at the New England Conservatory. The second cantata will be heard at the 5pm Vespers service: Bach’s tour-de-force for Palm Sunday, BWV 182 Himmelskönig sei willkommen. Vespers will also feature a delightful festival Magnificat scored for the same ensemble as the cantata. Having been found in the Düben collection alongside works by the north German master Dieterich Buxtehude, the Magnificat was once assumed to be his; however this attribution has since […]

The Royal Philharmonic Society Awards 2024, at the Royal Northern College of Music
[…] The BBC Singers were recognised for the quality, style and imagination they bring to a range of endeavour, receiving the Ensemble Award. l François-Xavier Roth received the Conductor Award for his work with the London Symphony Orchestra and his own ensemble, Les Siècles; the Chamber-Scale Composition Award went to Laurence Osborn for TOMB! premiered by the GBSR Duo and 12 Ensemble at the Norfolk and Norwich Festival; the Storytelling Award went to Leah Broad for Quartet, a book about four female composers; and the Young Artist Award was presented to mezzo soprano Lotte Betts-Dean. PS: Having once been part of a partly similar awards shindig myself, it was like a reminder of old times to see how these things are put together. You invite all your nominees and their friends to come to swell the crowd, but you keep the winners’ names confidential, of course … and then you worry that some of the chosen winners have not committed to being there. With performers, one trick is […]
