The penultimate concert and and final piano recital in this season of Tuesdays Till Two is given by a musician who will be making his début at St John’s, Spanish pianist Antonio Oyarzabal. He will be playing music that evoking and inspired by scenes of childhood and tales for children, including pieces by composers such as Schumann, Debussy, and Ravel. As usual the café will be open from noon, serving a range of hot drinks and homemade quiche, cakes, scones etc. All profits from the café will go to The Green Backyard. The concert will begin promptly at 1pm. Admission is free, but those who are able to afford it are asked to make a donation. The suggested amount is £4. Thursday, January 14, 2016 Birthdays Ludwig Ritter von Köchel In 1800 Ludwig Ritter von Köchel was born in Stein, Lower Austria. He studied law in Vienna and graduated with a PhD in 1827. For fifteen years, he was tutor to the four sons of Archduke Charles of Austria. Köchel was rewarded with a knighthood and a generous financial settlement, permitting him to spend the rest of his life as a private scholar. Contemporary scientists were greatly impressed by his botanical researches in North Africa, the Iberian Peninsula, the United Kingdom, the North Cape, and Russia. In addition to botany, he was interested in geology and mineralogy, but also loved music, and was a member of the Mozarteum Salzburg. He died of cancer at age 77 in Vienna.
