Ethel Smyth's Mass in D at Southwark Cathedral
There are some works which hover on the edge of the repertoire without ever appearing, and it is often ironic that when such works appear it is often in clusters. Such is the case with Dame Ethel Smyth's Mass in D, not only is it being performed by the BBC Symphony Orchestra and Chorus at the Barbican, but Dominic Ellis-Peckham will be conducting at at Southwark Cathedral on 3 November 2018. Their programme is equally cosmopolitan' This week's free download is the first movement of Nicolaus à Kempis's Symphony à 4 No. 1 Op. 12, played by In Echo, directed by cornettist Gawain Glenton. The piece is taken from the album 'Music in a Cold Climate: Sounds of Hansa Europe', which received 4 stars for performance and 5 stars for recording in the June issue of BBC Music Magazine. Little is known about Kempis. A composer active in Brussels in the mid-17th century, he was nominated as organist of the Cathedral of St Michael and St Gudula around 1626. […]
