West Green House Opera: new artistic director Tom Elwin introduces the 2024 season
[…] Hopkins, from The Sixteen, was the previous artistic director]. Tom thinks that this new role is interesting both for him and for the company, as he brings a singers point of view to the artistic directorship having sung as a principal both in the UK and abroad. He is aware of the singers' point of view.He is currently involved in planning the 2025 season which will have a Shakespeare theme with productions of Verdi's Macbeth, Cole Porter's Kiss me Kate and Bellini's Capuletti e Montecchi. Tom points out that whilst there are plenty of opportunities still for UK-based singers with lyric voices, those with fuller voices can miss out so he feels that offering opportunities for Verdi's Macbeth is important. Our discussion returns to the importance of supporting singers, and his new role at West Green has given Tom a chance to step back and look at the industry. To be honest, until studying the CD booklet and doing a quick bit of supplementary research, I had no idea he was so relatively modern, living until 1986. And although I am not a huge organ buff, I certainly recognize the names of the famous organists Pierre Cochereau, Jean Guillou, and Marie-Claire Alain – all of whom were students of Duruflé. However, although I knew very little about Duruflé the composer (pictured below), I was familiar with one of his compositions, because his Requiem was sometimes paired on recordings along with the Requiem of his fellow Frenchman, Gabriel Fauré. An outstanding example of that pairing is the Telarc release featuring Robert Shaw leading the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra and Chorus.Whereas the Telarc recording of the Duruflé features the full […]

Magnum Opus: Britten Sinfonia's composer development scheme showcases work from 2023 composers David John Roche, Daniel Soley and Crystalla Serghiou
[…] Roche, Crystalla Serghiou and Daniel Soley who have been embedded with the orchestra over the past year. They wrote wind quintets which were premièred as part of a successful and well-received Britten Sinfonia tour in April last year. Recently, they have composed further substantial chamber concertos to be premièred at the finale event at St Giles’ Cripplegate (close to the Barbican Centre) on Saturday 2nd March (3.00pm, see Barbican website) by Britten Sinfonia conducted by William Cole and a soloist of their choosing. Furthermore, the composers have had the opportunity of working closely with the players and their soloist in workshops and rehearsals as well as receiving feedback and mentoring from the 2023 programme directors, Dani Howard and Raymond Yiu. David John Roche describes his music as ‘direct, determined and loud’ and ‘strongly influenced by heavy metal, lush orchestral music and his working-class Welsh background’, His concerto for electric guitar is written for […]
