Here are several upcoming livestreams that are awfully close to the don't-miss category for me. First, we've got hot and cold running Trittico performances, then a pair of great works by Philip Glass. In 2009, San Francisco Opera performed a modern-dress Il Trittico with Patricia Racette in the three leading female roles. She was especially great in Suor Angelica, where Ewa Podles was her terrifying aunt, and in Gianni Schicchi, which I think is the funniest hour of opera ever written. Her accomplices included the wonderful Paolo Gavanelli as Michele in Il Tabarro and the title character in Gianni Schicchi, Brandon Jovanovich, David Lomeli, Meredith Arwady, Andrea Silvestrelli, Catherine Cook, and others, many others. The production came from NYCO, so the likelihood is that it is gone gone gone. I loved this production so much I saw it three times. SFO streams this production from their home page on Saturday, June 13, at 10 AM Pacific Time. […]

Bells are ringing
[…] He made his operatic debut in 1956; just two years later he performed Alfredo to the Violetta of Maria Callas in what we all know as “The Lisbon Traviata.” Here’s some fascinating trivia: Kraus made the first of his 136 Met performances as the Duca in Rigoletto alongside Cornell MacNeil and Roberta Petersat the old house in January 1966; he ended his tenure with the company in the same role in November 1994 with Paolo Gavanelli and Sumi Jo, sounding much the way he had 28 years earlier. He returned in April 1996 at age 68 for the 25th anniversary of James Levine and delivered an unforgettable “Pourquoi me réveiller?” He died in Madrid in 1999 at age 71.

[…] the productions on stage ("rakes"). Not a catch: these productions are mostly rather expensive, not impulse-buy material. I'm a little shocked that Susannah is up for sale so soon, considering that it is new new new, but the sale contract includes "free rental to SFO" for the next decade. I hope it'll be back. I'm so sorry to see that Yeargan Rigoletto leave town. It was first seen in the 90s with Swenson and Gavanelli, and I have loved it every time I've seen it. We can expect a new production next time SFO performs the opera, I suppose.

Nabucco, un air de liberté
[…] raisonnable.
