Young artists in a Georgian country house setting, what's not to love
Dabton HouseDabton House is a Georgian country house on the Queensberry Estate in Dumfriesshire, built in the 1820s and very much a classical villa. From 17 to 19 May 2024, the house is hosting a Classical Music Retreat, giving guests the chance to hear emerging Scottish artists in the intimate confines of Dabton House's drawing room. The weekend is being presented by Absolute Classics, artistic director Alex McQuiston, an organisation that presents classical music across Dumfries & Galloway, showcasing finest classical musicians to audiences while also nurturing and supporting emerging talents. The Classical Music Retreat at Dabton House features Scottish violinist Iona McDonald and pianist Yuki Negishi in Clara Schumann, Franck, Lili Boulanger and Saint-Saens, 16-year-old cellist Will Archibald (runner up in the final of the Scottish Young SoloMusician of the Year in May 2023) with Negishi in Schumann, Ligeti and Rachmaninov, Scottish soprano Catriona McArthur with Negishi in an eclectic […]

Dance Music of the Germania Musical Society
A free concert resulting from the research of this writer along with the efforts of the Harvard Musical Association Library Committee takes place on March 3rd at 3:00, at St. John’s Church, 27 Devens Street, in Charlestown. Just show up (entry is free). Leave a comment below if you have questions. Winsome duo-pianists Chi-Wei Lo and Xiaopei Xu, collectively known as Psychopomp Ensemble (guide of souls), who have been reinventing the recital, once brilliantly interpolated the Beatles’ “Imagine” into the Gottschalk’s “The Union” HERE at 52:40; they will preside in an acoustically warm sanctuary on a restored 1870 Chickering concert grand. A light reception will follow. The Germania Musical Society deserves to emerge from the cocoon of writings by musicological specialists and reclaim the interest of a larger public. Twenty-four virtuosi, most from Josef Gungl’s orchestra, left Germany after the revolutions of 1848-1849, with utopian and transcendental expectations for a musical […]

Wagner: Götterdämmerung suite - Michael Sanderling, Lucerne Symphony Orchestra - Le Piano Symphonique, Lucerne 2024 (Photo: Philipp Schmidli)Michael Sanderling is the current chief conductor of the Lucerne Symphony Orchestra, responsible not only for the orchestra's regular season at KKL Lucerne but for conducting the orchestra in concerts at the orchestra's Le Piano Symphonique festival. [see my interview with the festival's intendant, Numa Bischof Ullman]. This year, the orchestra was accompanying the Liszt cycle (the two piano concertos and Totentanz with pianist Yoav Levanon) and Grieg's Piano Concerto (with pianist Elisabeth Leonskaja), but alongside the performance of Liszt's Piano Concerto No. 2 the orchestra was also playing Michael Sanderling's suite from Wagner's Gotterdammerung. My chat with Michael Sanderling too place at a busy time, fitted in amongst his conducting and rehearsal commitments during the festival, as well as the planning for the recording sessions the following week.Michael comments that if you have […]
