First comes the Overture to Il Ruggiero, Johann Adolph Hasse’s – and Pietro Metastasio’s – final work from Orlando furioso. Originally commanded by Maria Theresa for the marriage of Maria Antonia/Marie Antoinette and the French Dauphin, the work's libretto was not completed in time, so it served instead for the 1771 marriage of the Empress's son Archduke Ferdinand Charles, Governor of the Duchy of Milan, to Maria Beatrice, daughter of Ercole (Hercules) III d’Este, Duke of Modena, and his estranged wife, Maria Teresa, Duchess of Massa and Princess of Carrara in her own right. As heiress to four further Italian territories, Maria Beatrice offered an advantageous match for the Habsburgs, and had originally been intended for one of Ferdinand's elder brothers, Archduke Peter Leopold (now Duke of Tuscany and later Emperor Leopold II). The new head of San Carlo is … the old one
Rosanna Purchia has been brought back as sovrintendente of San Carlo Opera, over the heated objections of the Mayor of Naples. There is a Facebook page, demanding her dismissal. Anybody know what she has done wrong? UPDATE: Our Ragazzo in the loggia reports: ‘Nothing is wrong with Ms. Purchia, she is not the best intendant in the world, but in the end of the day she is not too bad, and she is kind of experienced… except that the Naples mayor De Magistris is against her, and wanted her out, calling for a new era of more ‘transparency… Ms. Purchia had accepted an offer to be intendant at Teatro Bellini of Catania, but now she is turning Catania down and she wants to stay at San Carlo… The first three months of this year are counting as the start of “annus horribilis” for the way the decisions are taken […]

Outside every bar in Italy you'll see un Ragazzo d'oro drinking a glass of bright orange drink. For the uninitiated, or least those of a Northern disposition, this fizzing beverage would appear to be Irn-Bru, the ludicrously saccharine Strathclyde libation. Those more Mediterranean-inclined souls will know it as Aperol, the poco alcolico lighter-than-Campari aperitivo from Padua, flavoured with orange, rhubarb and other aromatics. Yet my first experience of Aperol was not in its Italian homeland of Italy, rather over the mountains in Austria, sitting among the crowds outside the Schmetterlinghaus in Vienna's Burggarten.
