Marc-André Hamelin: New Works for Piano (CD Review)
[…] most classical music fans, his piano music is still pretty much out of the classical piano music mainstream: the French composer Gabriel Fauré (1825-1924). Our review of Hamelin’s gorgeous Fauré disc can be found here. On this new release Hamelin steps way outside the classical keyboard mainstream: the “new works for piano” of the album’s title are new works by none other than pianist and composer Marc-André Hamelin. In his CD booklet essay, British composer, pianist, and academic Francis Potts (b. 1957) writes, “Marc-André Hamelin sees himself as a pianist who composes, yet he carries forward a noble tradition of excelling in both domains. Baroque gem: Hasse's early serenata gets an intriguing modern staging in Buxton with some stylish singing.
[…] Hasse's serenata with two singers from this year's chorus.We caught Buxton International Festival's production of Hasse's Antonio e Cleopatra on Saturday 16 July 2022 at the Pavilion Arts Centre. Directed by Evangeline Cullingworth with designs by Grace Venning, the opera featured Ellie Neate as Cleopatra and Thalie Knights as Antonio.
