From Early Music to contemporary: the Royal Festival Hall organ is 70 and organist James McVinnie is celebrating with a Southbank Centre residency
[…] statement too. James premiered the work and has given eight or nine performances of it since and is pleased to be bringing it to London. He thinks that both hall and organ will be ideal for the work, the speakers will look amazing. On 29 June, James is back at the Southbank Centre, at the Purcell Room this time, with the James McVinnie Ensemble in a programme entitled American Minimalism, with music by Gabriella Smith, Philip Glass, John Adams and inti figgis-vizueta. The ensemble features four keyboard players, James himself plus Eliza McCarthy, Siwan Rhys, and Hugh Rowlands. The ensemble has its origins in 2017 when Philip Glass was turning 80. James has always been a big fan of Glass's music, particularly that from the 1960s and 1970s. He is one of those who saw Einstein on the Beach in London in 2021 and it changed his life. Visiting Aucoin’s Underworld
Boston area favorite-son composer Matthew Aucoin reached a pinnacle of recognition in November of 2021 at the Metropolitan Opera, where his opera Eurydice (book and libretto by Sarah Ruhl) vividly and artfully retold the Orpheus-plus myth from the tragedienne’s perspective. The underworld has never since been the same. “It’s not surprising that a tale about the greatest musician in history, a man who could make the very stones weep when he performed, keeps appealing to his descendants. The scenario offers composers a wedding party, a tragic death, an evocation of what lies beyond, an attempt at resurrection, a plangent lament — opportunities to shine, and to place themselves in a grand tradition.” NYT 2021 For the Boston Lyric Opera’s production, Aucoin reduced the orchestration demands considerably, but according to our interview subject, award-winning bass-baritone Mark S. Doss*, who plays the newly added role of Eurydice’s father, “…the sound is quite […]

Jacques Cohen: The Lady of Satis House - Marie Vassiliou at Tete-a-Tete: The Opera Festival in 2012 (Photo: Claire Shovelton)Jacques Cohen's operatic monodrama The Lady of Satis House premiered in 2012. A commission from Bill Bankes-Jones' Tete-a-Tete: The Opera Festival, it was directed by Joe Austin, designed by Emily Harwood and performed by soprano Marie Vassiliou and the Piatti Quartet. 2012 was also the bicentenary of Charles Dickens' birth and faced with writing the opera in six weeks, Jacques chose Miss Havisham from Great Expectations as the subject, drawing his text from Dickens' book.Jacques Cohen (Photo: Lester Barnes)Now, some 12 years after those first performances, the work has appeared on disc, on the Meridian label, again performed by Marie Vassiliou with the Tippett Quartet. The disc also features two of Jacques' works for string quartet, When the Bough Breaks: Three Lullabies for String Quartet and From Behind Glass: Tone Poem for […]

Wake up and listen to the music
[…] Composed in 1979 it has a libretto by one of Denmark's greatest poets Ole Sarvig (1921-81). Writing of the opera Siddhartha some years ago I said that "Despite its arcane origins and uncompromising modernity Per Nørgård's music sounds surprisingly familiar at first hearing, an apparent vindication of his rejection of serialism as an artificial device". Exhibiting fewer Buddhist tendencies but also highly recommended are Per Nørgård's symphonies, notably the abrasive Eighth. Philip Glass is one of the two modern composer's celebrated for their Buddhist tendencies. His work for the Tibetan Vajrayana school of Buddhism and his commitment to preserving the Tibetan way of life in the face of the Chinese cultural genocide is celebrated. He scored Martin Scorse's 1997 movie Kundun depicting the Dalai Lama's flight into exile from Tibet, and his Fifth Symphony sets extracts from the Tibetan Book of the Dead and concludes with the […]
