COT Alum Reunion - Jerry, Josh, Daniel, Bridget, BD, Sally, Colleen Well there were no auditions so I guess that counts as a day off! I had a lovely time though - lunch with David and Deborah Holloway, then a reunion with a great group of former COT staff members, including Jerry Tietz, former artistic operations director, and since 2013 General Manager, who is leaving for an exciting new position at Northwestern University. And then to the CSO and a concert performance of Pelléas et Mélisande conducted, as it had been in London with the Philharmonia earlier this season, by Esa Pekka Salonen. The CSO had the misfortune to suffer no less than four late cast changes - Mélisande (Jenny Carlstedt replacing Christine Rice) Golaud (Willard White who had been booked for Arkel), Arkel therefore (David Govertsen) and the Doctor (Bradley Smoak). This piece requires such intricate and intimate knowledge, and fluent […]

Elephant and Castle It has been something of a mixed emotion day - I realised how much I miss Chicago as I went about normal business. This was my home for 13 happy years and it was really all good times...........and this evening we had a good get together of dear friends and colleagues including my first and last Board Presidents, Dorothy Osborn and Greg O'Leary, as well as current General Manager Jerry Tietz, former General Manager Roger Weitz (now in charge of the opera in Omaha, and Colleen Flanigan, longtime mistress of all things marketing and PR - and now moved to the Auditorium Theater in that capacity. And I also paid a visit to the favourite watering hole - the Elephant and Castle - for lunch with the stalwart violone player Jerry Fuller. And then this evening to the performance of Maria di Buenos Aires by COT at the […]

[…] them - discretely lit and there you have it. Anyway it worked brilliantly which is testament to the immaculate preparation in all departments. And the show was a huge success with a large audience totally engaged and getting it, and giving a standing and noisy ovation at the end. We were all pretty thrilled....... The performance was preceded by a charming and amusing explanation to the public by our brilliant Director of Artistic Operations, Jerry Tietz, who seems to be able to turn his head and hand to everything he encounters and accomplish it all with aplomb. And our Production Manager, Brad Vernatter, who had to deal with the unfolding drama, displayed a calm, confident and decisive demeanor, handling himself and the situation with remarkable maturity. The ability of these two young people is scary! COT is truly blessed to have this strong team. It was a late night and […]

[…] Cambridge and Ashley Brown are extremely fetching as the gals, Julie and Magnolia, and Nathan Gunn inevitably as dashing as you can get as Gaylord. And Chicago actor Ross Lehman gives a virtuoso performance as Captain Andy Hawks - brilliant and hilarious. With the leadership of the prodution in the hands of Francesca Zambello and John DeMain you can't go wrong! I left at half time to be sure not to be late for Jerry Tietz's little birthday party. He will only reach 30 once!
