Wake up and listen to the music
Elsewhere much brouhaha about the launch of a BBC Radio 3 extension. This new online channel will offer "peaceful favourites.....ethereal choral music, soothing orchestral textures [and] mood-based repertoire [including] shows that lean into the mindfulness, wellbeing and sleep space... to create a consistent, calming listening experience". Personally this development does not worry me very much, as I have given up listening to Radio 3 completely since it became a deformed clone of Classic FM. But the hijacking of wisdom practices such as mindfulness to justify a desperate lunge for the Classic FM market does concern me. Mindfulness has been taken out of context and exploited by many other misguided corporations before the BBC saw it as silver bullet for the moribund Radio 3. Similarly yoga and other components of Eastern wisdom traditions have been ruthlessly exploited for commercial gain. In fact mindfulness is a key component of Vipassana meditation in the Buddhist Theravada ('Way […]

2023 in Opera and Music Theatre: historically informed Berlioz & Wagner, dramatic Handel, a G&S rarity, RVW, Zandonai in Berlin, new Jonathan Dove
Purcell & Pountney: The Masque of Might - Andri Björn Róbertsson, Xavier Hetherington, Matthew Brook - Opera North (Photo: James Glossop)One particular highlight this year was Berlioz' Les Troyens at the BBC Proms with Dinis Sousa conducting the Orchestre Revolutionnaire et Romantique. Wagner was something of an ongoing theme for 2023, including Dresden Music Festival's historically informed Das Rheingold and a remarkable performance of Die Walküre from London Opera Company. Handel masterpieces included Jephtha at Covent Garden with Allan Clayton and Saul at the Komische Oper, Berlin with Luca Tittoto, plus more of a rarity, Arminio, from the Jette Parker Young Artists at Covent Garden. We also caught Allan Clayton in a remarkable reinvention of Britten's Peter Grimes at the Paris Opera. Gilbert & Sullivan also featured with Iolanthe returning to ENO, and a rare revival of Princess Ida from John Wilson and the OAE.New opera included the premiere of Jonathan […]

What would be the biggest headline ever?
There have already been some pretty big stories: The moon landing, that was big. And the assassination of John F. Kennedy. And 9/11. But, if you ask me, the biggest news ever would be the day we get visitors from another planet.Let me paint you a picture of how it happens. Unlike in the many fantasy films, these visitors have arrived in peace. One day they just land in their spaceship, let's say...in Potsdam. Since there's no shooting or anything like that, the Mayor of Potsdam starts to mingle with them.By this time, the world's media is following each and every development closely. The Mayor is presenting the latest models from the German car industry to the aliens. They follow it all politely, but don't seem particularly impressed. The Mayor is panicking, and starts to show them some up-to-the-minute technical innovations. Still no reaction. The aliens look as if they […]
