Santa Fe Opera announced its 2018 season today: Candide, Bernstein, new production (Laurent Pelly), company premiere. Bicket/Rae, Shrader, Burdette, Schneiderman, Ott, Troxell.Madama Butterfly, Puccini, revival. Bignamini; Kaduce/Martinez, Gluekert/Guerrero, Marino, PallesenDoctor Atomic, Adams & Sellars, new production, company premiere. Aucoin/McKinney, Bullock, Bliss, Arwady, Okulich, MixThe Italian Girl in Algiers, Rossini, revival. Rovaris/Mack, Swanson, Conner, Hendrix, VermAriadne auf Naxos, R. Strauss, new production. Gaffigan/Echalaz, Sledge, Morley, Majeski, GilfreyMost exciting, to me, is the new production of Doctor Atomic. I hope it won't be a duplicate of the SF production. After that, Ariadne. Might see Butterfly as it has been ten years. Candide, maybe, but there will be a good semi-staged version at SFS next season.

Everyone has an arietta but there’s simply not enough substance to generates operatic moments—with one exception. The actor Larry Renault’s anguish as his career dissolves is masterfully conveyed, thanks to a moving performance by tenor Richard Troxell. But I kept wanting more from everyone else—and there simply isn’t any more in the material. But if you’re staging an opera that’s about style as opposed to substance, then you’d better have a damned stylish production and fortunately, Minnesota Opera and co-producers Wexford Festival Opera and Atlanta Opera enhanced the Broadway-tinged score with witty staging, excellent performances and stunning production set and costume designs. Infused with cold medicine and lulled into a sense of security by cough lozenges so as not to compete with poor consumptive Mimi, I entered the Tennessee Theatre last weekend with definite expectations for a La Bohème from Knoxville Opera—an opera that had been absent from Knoxville stages for 10 years, almost to the day. Expectations, though, can be perilous for opera-goers, particularly if one is confining the work narrowly to either vocal or dramatic pigeonholes. Puccini’s La Bohème has always worked best as a theatrical fusion of the two—and that is exactly why this Knoxville Opera production was so successful. Jessica Rose Cambio and Richard Troxell made for an excellent Mimi and Rodolfo, their romantic meeting engaging, romantic, and as believable as Puccini allows. Cambio sang Mimi with a lovely clarity and full high end, yet with a refined delicacy that was entrancing. Her Act III aria, “Donde lieta usci,” […]
