This week’s piece comes from Richard Wetz, a German late-romantic (late nineteenth-century) composer. Despite his remarkable talents, Wetz refused to tempt the limelight by moving to Berlin or Vienna in his youth, instead confining himself to the provincial town of Erfurt, Thuringia. His music was considered impressive, but unimportant: nothing more than an imitation–at best, a continuation–of Anton Bruckner . The Requiem, however, represents the first cracks in this influence; is one of the first pieces where he begins to define his own, independent style. We can imagine that the composer, now middle-aged, has, he knows somewhat futilely, decided to devote the remainder of his life to truly original work, rather than mere homage.
