Exclusive: China cuts an orchestra down by half
We hear from musicians in the Guiyang Symphony Orchestra that they have been called in one by one to be told that playing personnel will be cut to half size next season and wages will also be cut by fifty percent. The orchestra, funded by a wealthy local couple, has vigorously recruited foreign musicians, as well as an Italian music director, Rico Saccani. Now, the players are being told that there will be no foreign soloists in future and the title of music director will be abolished as there will not be enough left for him to do. A new title will be devised for Saccani, who will conduct three last concerts in June. Several foreign players have bought houses and started families in Guiyang. Renowned conducting teacher has died
Students are sharing news of the death last night of Gustav Meier, possibly the most sought-after conducting teacher in the US. Gustav, who was 86 and suffering from cancer, retired three years ago as head of conducting at the Peabody Institute in Baltimore, handing over to one of his past pupils, Marin Alsop. His alumni include the late Yakov Kreizberg, Antonio Pappano, John Mauceri , Carl St. Clair, Rico Saccani , Alexander Mickelthwaite and Bobby McFerrin. Summers, he taught at Tanglewood. Aside from his teaching career, Gustav was music director for forty years of the Greater Bridgeport Symphony Orchestra, Connecticut, 1972–2013.

Just in: China names Italian music director
We hear from players in the orchestra that the Guiyang Symphony in southwest China, has named Rico Saccani as its next new music director. Saccani, 63, is a former music director of the Budapest Philharmonic ans principal guest at the Hungarian Opera. Guiyang, one of China’s leading orchestras, opens its auditions to overseas players. Saccani’s appointment signals its intent to play on the world stage.
