Ravel: Concertos & Melodies (CD review)
[…] in a single movement. It is not as frisky or airy as the Concerto in G but, in fact, seems starker, weightier, sometimes sterner. Still, Tiberghien never overemphasizes the more severe or more martial elements of the score, concentrating instead on its insistent rhythms and mysterious, often dramatic ambience. The disc ends with the song Sainte (1896), again based on a poem by Stéphane Mallarmé, which concludes things in a somewhat solemn but cogent tone.Producer and engineer Jiri Heger recorded the music at the Grande salle Pierre Boulez and Le Studio, Philharmonie de Paris, France, December 2020 and September 2021. The sound Mr. Heger produces is among the best I’ve heard. It’s extremely well detailed, as transparent as it can be, with a good depth of field and stereo spread. Dynamics and impact are fine as well, creating a realistic realization of the music.JJP

[…] (that honor probably goes to No. 2), it is surely one of his most-original, most-imaginative works. Featuring pianist Jean-Francois Heisser, one must first become accustomed to the deeper yet less-mellifluent sound of the period piano. Together with the stormy, close-up recording, the music makes a grand sweep across the stage. One clearly hears the elements of traditional Classicism as well as (for Saint-Saens, anyway) contemporary Romanticism in Heisser’s playing. It’s a lovely performance.Artistic Director Jiri Heger and sound engineer Anne-Sophie Versneyen recorded the music live at the eglise Saint-Sulpice, Paris (symphony) in May 2010 and at the Opera-Comique, Paris in June 2009. The sound is typically “live”; that is, it’s precise, close-up, enormously dynamic, and a trifle edgy. Imaging seems kind of all over the place, with little dimensionality and a limited stereo spread. (For being so close, it’s not very wide.) The organ, though loud enough, doesn’t seem deep […]

Berlioz: Symphonie fantastique (CD review)
[…] a tad light on spectacle. As a companion piece on the disc, Maestro Roth selected Berlioz's overture to Les Franc-juges, a work the composer wrote only a few years earlier than his "symphonie." It's really only the overture that most people know today, so it's not a great loss having so little of the music. Whatever, Roth does a good job playing up the contrasts in the music and making it enjoyably energetic. Producer Jiri Heger and engineer Alix Ewald recorded the album at Maison de l'Orchestre national d'lle-de-France, Alfortville, France in July 2019. As we might expect from a period ensemble, there is a good deal of transparency involved as the instruments stand out realistically. Then, add in an enormous dynamic range (watch that volume control), and you get a most lifelike presentation. The orchestral spread is wide but not exaggerated; the orchestral depth is fairly deep; the mild […]
