Overtures from Finland (CD Review)
by Ryan Ross Sibelius: Karelia Overture, Op. 10; Klami: Nummisuutarit; Melartin: Overture to ‘Prinsessa Ruusunen’, Op. 22; Madetoja: Comedy Overture, Op. 53; Järnefelt: Ouverture lyrique; Mielck: Dramatische Ouvertüre, Op. 6; Palmgren: Overture from ‘Tuhkimo-Sarja’, Op. 21; Kajanus: Overtura sinfonica; Kaski: Prélude, Op. 7 No. 1; Järnefelt: Praeludium. Oulu Sinfonia; Rumon Gamba, conductor. Chandos CHSA 5336. With the obvious exception of Sibelius, many listeners are unlikely to have heard of most or all of the composers represented on this disc. However, I hope that a simple lack of name recognition will not deter them from giving it a listen; there is some lovely music to be enjoyed here. Moreover, all of these works are short, with the longest (the overture by Mielck) lasting just 12:24. Conductors and artistic directors of live concerts should also take note: it would not be difficult to squeeze one or more of them onto their programs, even on a […]

Sir Malcolm Sargent - ICON box (18 CDs)
[…] 2nd hasn’t been included. Sibelius’ Symphony no. 1 is in acceptable mono sound dating from 1956. It’s captivating, albeit lacking some orchestral detail. However, it is the 5th Symphony (1958) which is one of the highlights of the set. It’s an intelligent, well-paced reading, dramatic in its intensity, with Sargent bringing many insights. A few weeks ago this symphony was the chosen work for MusicWeb International Recommends, and my recommendation then was the 1932 Robert Kajanus/LSO recording. If the opportunity for that choice came again, I would not hesitate to add this Sargent performance to the list. Pohjola’s Daughter, also with the BBC SO, is a stunning success, the dark and brooding opening gradually opening out into a performance of visceral tension. The other Sibelius works were recorded with the Vienna Philharmonic in 1961 and improvement in sound quality reflects this five year leap forward. I would single out the […]

Jean Sibelius: Symphony No.1 in E minor – Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra, Santtu-Matias Rouvali (HD 1080p)
Santtu-Matias Rouvali interprets Sibelius in his own distinctive way and opens a new fascinating world.A better launch can't be imagined: when Sibelius' First Symphony had been premièred in Helsinki it travelled on a tour with Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra and conductor Robert Kajanus to Stockholm, Copenhagen, Hamburg and Berlin to finish at the 1900 World Exhibition in Paris. Sibelius wrote from Berlin: "My music was a glorious, colossal success".Under the baton of the talented Finnish conductor Santtu-Matias Rouvali, the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra performs Jean Sibelius' Symphony No.1 in E minor, Op.39. Maestro move: Sakari Oramo takes over at Sibelius Academy
Message from Vesa Siren: Congratulations to Sibelius Academy and Sakari Oramo, their next professor of conducting from 2020. This is the famous chair of Jorma Panula, Eri Klas, Leif Segerstam and now Atso Almila, who retires in 2019. Oramo, son of two Sibelius Academy professors, will probably have to give up one of his orchestras – BBC Symphony, Stockholm Phil, Ostrobotnian Chamber Orchestra) – but “I will follow the situation and there is no hurry”, he just said to me. He will continue in London at least until summer 2020 and in Stockholm at least until 2021. Much more on Oramo (pages 773-800) and on Finnish conducting from Kajanus and Sibelius to Santtu-Matias Rouvali and Klaus Mäkelä auf Deutsch in (my book) Finnlands Dirigenten , published next Friday in Berlin. portrait: Norman Perryman Official announcement: Conductor Sakari Oramo has been invited to become Professor of Orchestral Training […]
