Duo Piano Fest Returns In PersonThe Music Institute of Chicago presents the 34th season of its Chicago Duo Piano Festival featuring four public events July 8–17, 2022 at Nichols Concert Hall, 1490 Chicago Avenue, Evanston. Tom Borrow's 22/23 SeasonThe fast-rising 21-year-old Israeli pianist Tom Borrow will continue to make important debuts next season, following a 2021-22 that saw great successes at the Cleveland Orchestra, Orchestre National du Capitole de Toulouse, Czech Philharmonic, BBC Symphony Orchestra, Sao Paulo Symphony, Basque National Orchestra, Ulster Orchestra - with conductors including Sakari Oramo, Thierry Fischer, Robert Trevino, Tomas Netopil, Giacomo Sagripanti and Jac Van Steen. And he will shortly finish the season with first appearances at the BBC Proms (with the BBC Symphony Orchestra under Martyn Brabbins), Ruhr Piano Festival, Schloss Nymphenburg, and elsewhere.Tom's 2022-23 season will begin in early October with a debut at the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, playing Mozart's Piano Concerto No.24 under conductor Peter Oundjian. Nehring As I write these words, the Omicron variant of the COVID-19 virus is wreaking havoc around the globe; I urge all readers of Classical Candor to become fully vaccinated (and boosted) and to practice masking and social distancing. The safest thing might be to stay at home as much as possible, where the most pleasant thing might be to enjoy some fine music. To that end, and to follow that venerable end of the year tradition, I have compiled a list of a dozen delightful recordings that it was my pleasure to review over this past year. Stephen Hough’s First String Quartet To Be Premiered by Takács Quartet World-renowned as a pianist, and now increasingly recognized as a composer as well, Stephen Hough was recently commissioned to compose his First String Quartet, subtitled “Les Six Rencontres,” which is premiered by the Grammy Award-winning Takács Quartet this winter. The work, which is also scheduled to be recorded by the Takács for Hyperion Records, is featured on a variety of the ensemble’s upcoming programs, including three in which Mr. Hough also performs with the ensemble in Dvorák’s Piano Quintet No. 2 in A major, Op. 81. “Les Six Rencontres,” in six movements, was commissioned by Elizabeth and Justus Schlichting, Chamber Music patrons of Costa Mesa’s Segerstrom Center for the Arts, where the world premiere takes place on Wednesday, December 8 at 8:00 p.m. The European premiere takes place at London’s Wigmore Hall on Thursday, January 20 at 7:30 p.m. […]
