You have two ears and an opinion: artistic director Fiachra Garvey introduces this year's Classical Vauxhall festival
[…] support of his 'namesake' Cecilia Bartoli. Fiachra points out that during the 18th century it was common for castratos to sing female roles in opera (though it does not seem to have happened in London), so a man in a frock singing roles from female characters in opera is nothing new! With the other concerts, Fiachra finds that it helps audiences if the concerts have titles. So, the festival opens with Love and Loss, Rosanne Philippens (violin), Ben Goldscheider (horn) and Fiachra in music by Schumann, Franck, Huw Watkins and Brahms. The starting point for this was Brahms' Horn trio and as there are few works for this combination of instruments they were keen to include Huw Watkins' one. The first half includes Franck's Violin Sonata, written for the wedding of violinist Eugene Ysaye, whilst the Brahms is more elegiac, hence Love and Loss. The third edition of Classical Vauxhall, pianist Fiachra Garvey's festival at St Mark's Church, Kennington, takes place from 10 to 13 February 2022. After the second edition of the festival went online in March 2021 and welcomed 15,000 viewers, Garvey and the festival are looking forward to welcoming live audiences to a festival inspired by the visionary Jonathan Tyers, who opened the Vauxhall Pleasure Gardens to make entertainment accessible to everyone in the 18th century. Brahms is something of theme for the first two concerts as horn player Ben Goldscheider and violinist Rosanne Philippens join Fiachra Garvey for Brahms' Horn Trio plus music by Schumann, Franck and Huw Watkins' 2008 Horn Trio, then cellist Leonard Elschenbroich and pianist Alexei Grynyuk perform an all-Brahms programme, including the two cello sonatas. The Amatis Trio perform piano trios by Shostakovich, Schubert and the piano trio Moorlands by Swedish contemporary composer Andrea Tarrodi, which the group […]

This 7 April 2020 video from the Netherlands says about itself: Violinist Rosanne Philippens embrace

Philippens/Quentin/NJO/Ziang (Challenge Classics)This may not eclipse Baiba Skride’s Szymanowski disc of last year, but it certainly establishes the young Dutch violinist Rosanne Philippens as someone to watch. Philippens has a muscular, joined-up sound, which expands excitingly and can then recede smoothly in a moment. In the Violin Concerto No 1 she is partnered by Holland’s NJO, an orchestra of under-30s, conducted by Xian Zhang. On the remaining items, which include the three-movement Myths, her pianist is Julien Quentin, who is just as athletic and responsive. He provides playful piano cascades in La Fontaine d’Aréthuse and insistent ripples in Narcisse, in which Philippens’s languid violin line does indeed seem beguiled by its own beauty. The glassy effects and tense swoops of Dryades et Pan successfully evoke a dry, dusty summer wind, and together Philippens and Quentin career excitingly through the Tarantella. They could have stopped there: three brief pieces by […]
