Rachmaninoff: Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini; Respighi: Toccata for Piano and Orchestra; Casella: Partita for Piano and Orchestra (CD Review)
by Ryan RossJoshua Pierce, piano; Anton Nanüt, conductor; RTV Slovenia Symphony Orchestra. MSR 1839 This disc’s program notes by Eric Salzman state that all the works on it are “modernist pieces with strong connections to tradition,” and “can be regarded as neo-classical.” While he qualifies the latter label for each in turn, these claims seem variably strained to me. Despite the fact that two of the pieces are by Italian contemporaries, it would be truer to acknowledge the heterogeneity of the music here and gladly stick to that. (As an aside, I am thoroughly exasperated by the looseness with which the term “modernism” is thrown around these days.) What really strikes me about this offering is not only how much each work should be considered on its own terms, but also how easily the familiarity and accessibility of the Rachmaninoff Paganini Rhapsody can impede fair […]

Moving intimacy and sense of communication: Bach's St Matthew Passion from the Academy of Ancient Music, music director Laurence Cummings and just eight singers
[…] Mass in B minor and the Art of Fugue, not only have no apparent performance tradition from Bach's time but also leave us uncertain as to the exact performance forces that Bach envisaged. But an earlier masterwork, the St Matthew Passion, has a clear performance tradition from Bach's time, premiered in 1727, Bach performed it again in 1729, 1736, 1742, 1743 and 1746.But even so, there is critical dispute as to the forces Bach intended. Joshua Rifkin, Andrew Parrott and others have established that in Leipzig, Bach worked within a Lutheran tradition of one voice to part; this is how many of the weekly cantatas might have been performed. For larger works, Lutheran tradition suggested a ripieno group to reinforce the solo voices in ensembles and certainly the organ loft at St Thomas' Church in Leipzig would preclude using a large choir. But what would Bach have liked as ideal? We […]

Marriner 100: the Academy of St Martin in the Fields celebrates the centenary of its founder
Sir Neville MarrinerNext month, the Academy of St Martin in the Fields is celebrating the centenary of its founder Sir Neville Marriner (1924-2016) with a programme events beginning on what would have been Sir Neville's 100th birthday (15 April 2024), with concerts celebrating both Marriner and the orchestra's long-standing relationships with other musicians.Things begin with the Academy of St Martin in the Fields at its spiritual home, St Martin in the Fields, with direction shared between Joshua Bell, Tomo Keller and Jaime Martin in a programme of Handel, Mozart, Haydn, Vaughan Williams and Errollyn Wallen. Then on 16 April, the ASMF Chamber Ensemble is joined by Joshua Bell and pianist Murray Perrahia, in what will be his first performance in six years, at Wigmore Hall for Mendelssohn, Schumann and Sally Beamish [see my 2019 interview where Sally Beamish talks about her personal links with the orchestra]. There is a centenary gala concert at […]
