Britten Hymn to St Cecilia and love that dares speak its name : RIAS Kammerchor
Benjamin Britten Choral Songs from RIAS Kammerchor, from Harmonia mundi, in their first recording with new Chief Conductor Justin Doyle, featuring the Hymn to St. Cecilia, A Hymn to the Virgin, the Choral Dances from Gloriana, the Five Flower Songs op 47 and Ad majorem Dei gloriam op 17. This newe release extends RIAS Kammerchor's engagement woith British repertoire, established when they recorded Britten's Sacred and Profane together with songs by Elgar, Ralph Vaughan Williams and Chrales Stanford, with former Chief Marcus Creed in 2013. This new collection is particularly valuable because it focuses on works Britten wrote at a formative period in his career which even now is relatively unexplored. Britten's Hymn to St Cecilia op 27 is one of the classics of modern choral repertoire. It's not an "easy sing", lines and parts interwoven in inticate patterns. Unusual Christmas concert - songs, poetry and harp !
Unusual Christmas concert - songs, poetry and harp ! with Sarah Minns, Adam Best and Mary Reid at Stoke Newington Old Church From Roger ThomasSoprano Sarah Minns's message -- to very loosely paraphrase her introduction to this fascinating evening concert (December 5) -- was that Christmas is coming, but let's not drown in schmaltzy Xmas musical fare but, rather, examine the season of "hibernations and awakenings". The themes were not followed so closely as to self-destruct but we got the picture. The chilly wet and windy weather helped, as did the venue: Stoke Newington's Old Church (now an arts centre), the only surviving church in London built in the Elizabethan era.We don't hear enough of Sarah Minns, one of London's most characterful, lively and versatile classical sopranos. The versatility was in full play here; no piano for this recital but harp, played exquisitely by Mary Reid, who had also […]

Since its founding by Christina Pluhar in 2000, the early music ensemble L’Arpeggiata has gone from strength to strength, releasing 12 albums ranging in content from HIP recordings of lesser-known early Baroque repertoire to jazz-infused re-imaginings of Purcell and Monteverdi. This album is very much in the latter vein, featuring 10 rearrangements of Handel arias and sinfonias by Pluhar, 3 “straight” renditions, and improvisations on Vivaldi and Kapsburger. If you’re tired of uniform re-recordings of classical staples, this is the album for you. The question is, how do you present such a mix without descending into mere novelty? Pluhar, her ensemble, and her soloists (soprano Nuria Rial, countertenor Valer Sabadus and jazz clarinettist Gianluigi Trovesi) present some convincing answers. Pluhar’s arrangements are intelligent, tailored to the individual piece with sensitivity and restraint: contrast the enjoyably boisterous opening of Alcina with the subdued percussion of ‘O sleep, why Dost thou leave […]
